Connecting sea&sea /nikonos strobes to canonS50

  1. I was asked by 'alto' in the photo critique forum to offer some information about my camera setup. It is a canon s50 with standard WP-DC300 housing. A link in a german forum led me to a website of a guy who has developed an optical adapter which allows to connect nikonos compatible strobes to any camera. And the best: it does something like TTL control. I baught a Sea&Sea YS50TTL strobe at ebay for ~170$ and connected it to my canon s50 - it works really fine. See some of my pictures (my very first ones!) at

for more detailed information see the site of Matthias Heinrichs, who is the developer of this adapter:

I dont want to do some marketing for him, but the adapter is really great.

  2. I checked out his site and it looks interesting, but one question....

If the digital sensor gathers its power output data from the camera's internal pre-flash, doesn't that mean that you will have back-scatter problems due to the internal flash firing on the subject?

Why not? Its look like a great product.

What setting you use for your Canon?

    Hi

I also have this sensor. My YS-60 is also fireing at the preflash so the camera can measure how the mainflash has to be.

The backscatter-problem can be solved by mounting the sensor directly to the internal flash, shading the flash.

The most interesting part of this sensor is, that you can give the flash incl. the sensor to your buddy and he/she can use the flash to flash from nearly behind a object.

I agree with maecki2, you can mount the adaptor directly in front of the internal camera flash and you will have no problems. But I positioned a metal foil in the housing in front of the internal flash in order to reflect the light down to the adaptor which I simply mounted horizontaly to the stay of the strobe.

    @alto

The settings I use differ from object to object. For close-ups I normally prefer a Av of 8.0, for moving objects a Tv of 1/350. But even in Automatic Mode you are fine for most situations. I never needed the flash-compensation of the camera. The strobe is used in TTL-Mode! You are right: It is a great product. I got a (used) YS50 at ebay with sea arm and stay for ~160$, the adaptor for~100$ and have a fully functioning system - thats great.

  6. Thank's Tortugadive

I meant to the setting of the adapter, according to Matthias’s site you need to set the adapter to feet your camera, or do you uses the default values?

For the price of it, its looks like amazing product, I bought my YS25 for much more then your settings and its can't compare to it.

  7. @alto

yes - I simply use the default settings and it works fine with my S50. I tried to show some more pictures in the photo critique forum, but there went something wrong with the links - I'm not so familiar with this html/browser stuff.

  8. Hello,

You guys are right, the digital adapter is pretty cool and the guy who build it did a lot of studying.

I was checking his design and it is impressive (I am writing firmware for a living.)

Also it is pretty cool that he has everything air tight.

The only thing I don't like is the setup. I was offering my help to put some optical infrared port on it but he never answered my email.

I thought about building my own...

  9. I think Matthias is currently working on a combined controller at the moment. He recently posted on dd for suggestions. We haven't heard from him since. Interesting stuff.
