Diving San francisco area

  1. Hi, I am off to Hawaii in October this year with a brief stop en route at San francisco.

I will be there for a few days, can anyone recommend a good dive outfit close to the city for a days diving?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. There is good diving in Monterey. Both by boat and beach dives. You will want a dry suit.

  3. I agree -- you should get down to Monterey. It's less than 2 hours away (with no traffic). I've never heard of anyone diving up near San Francisco, but I suppose that a few die hards must do it.

  4. I would like to stay close to the city if possible, if I have to drive to Monterey I will need to hire a car etc, (this could bust the budget as I have a wedding to pay for in Hawaii)!!

I can't believe that there is not a larger diving community up in the San Francisco area; all that water!!

  6. Have you seen the water around here??

Everyone goes to Monterey to dive...

  7. Well I agree that Monterey is probably the best bet for diving but closer to the city, you can do the Farallons and perhaps the great whites which are "in season" in Oct. The colors on the rocks are gorgeous. Lots of surge though and choppy chop chop waters I was pretty green during the surface interval but nothing involuntarily expelled! ;)

Funnily enough, I actually saw divers when surfing at Lindemar beach years ago. I thought they were mad. I'm pretty sure there are a few shore dives along the San Mateo coast.

  8. Drew - if Lee doesn't want to rent a car to get to Monterey, he probably isn't going to want to rent a car to get to the dock to get to the Farallons! And San Mateo requires a car, too. Actually, you're going to need a car anyway, so you might as well rent one and drive to Monterey. ;)

  9. Well he can stay in Emeryville. Or BART and cab it from Oakland. Then again if budget is an issue then the Farallones aren't the cheapest trips either. ;)

  10. You can go muck diving in the Bay. I hear it's 1m deep with 1mm vis.

  11. 1m deep with 1mm vis.

Hang on a minute, when did you start using the metric system?!!!

    Lee.

  12. I've preferred metric since taking basic science courses in high school, but I'm forced to use SI because I live in the US! :)
