Oh dear - Flooded My DS-160

  1. Woe is me. I have flooded one of my DS160s. Battery looks a mess (black stuff coming out - acid) but strobe head looks generally ok having cleaned the contacts. I will test the strobe with my other battery later. Here's hoping it works and all I need to get is a new battery. Anyone had this experience before? I think I am jinxed when it comes to strobes. ;)

  2. I feel for you, hope it gets sorted soon and it's not too costly :)

I had a S&S YS250 go on my second dive. Make sure the strobe is properly dry before putting the battery , an engineer in Sharm told me to put rice in the battery compartment so it will desiccate the area.

    Good luck ;)

  3. Cheers Tristan - will try the rice thing. Can't make it any worse!!

  4. Elaine,

When you get the new battery installed (and clean out the rice), take a nice size shot of rum and pore it over the strobe into the ocean for Neptune. (might want to keep it off the o-ring) ;) Guaranteed to break the jinx and get your mojo back.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  5. LOL, Steve! ;) Sounds like a plan.

  6. I think you're better off sending it to the factory. As is often repeated, ikelite can hardly be beat in service. I had a DS-50 battery compartment flood, and although it is isolated from the strobe head, there can be current spikes that could ruin the strobe head.

  7. Sorry to hear it. At least Ike totally isolates the battery pack from the strobe so all you should have to do is get a new battery pack and clean off the contacts and you'll be good to go.

  8. I had a YS-90 strobe flood. I almost lost an eye when I tried to open the cover. Didn't realize it had flooded, and -- BANG! -- the cover shot back and almost took out my eye. Black gooey mess is right!

I had other issues with the strobe, so I sent it for repair. The cleaned out the battery compartment, changed the connectors, and it works fine.

  9. Remove rice before inserting alternate battery.

  10. Update - tried drying out the flooded battery, cleaning it off etc but it was dead as dodo. I got a new battery and all is well with the world (apart from the dent in my wallet!).

  11. Great to see you're back in the game Elaine.

Years ago I flooded my new ds-51 on my second dive- there was nothing sicker than seeing alot of air bubbles running out of the battery covery- and black stuff- all at a depth of 25meters!!! My mask then flooded with tears. Thankfully tho' it was all fixed up and rescued by Ikelite.

Id rather loose the battery than the whole strobe- think its a good testament to ikelite strobe design :)

Dont think about the dent in your wallet-and bless the strobe with rum as Steve says-or better still- try some whiskey- preferably Irish.

    Best wishes

Cheers! But, sorry, got to be Scotch!

  13. Sincere apologies for the faux pas Elaine...Of course....O flower of Scotland....we'll raise a glass to that !! :)
