canon 5D or 7D

  1. Hi there,

    My doubt, buy the:

    Canon 5D + SeaCam housing

    or

    Canon 7D + Aquatica housing

My point is that I'm also interested in they video skills, and, fot this the 7D is better, but in general this camera is a level down of the 5D.

    ¿what do you think about?

    Thanks!

Not sure if you meant the 5D or the 5D Mark II, but if the 5D Mark II, the Backscatter Review of 7D Housing has a good comparison of the cameras also at the bottom that is worth reading. (Note the recent Firmware update for 5D Mark II adds some more frame rates.)

  3. Hi,

    Thanks for the article.

And sorry, I was refered to the 5D Mark II.

Canon 5D Mark II + SeaCam housing

    or

    Canon 7D + Aquatica housing

    ¿what's your personal opinión?

¿is it enough reason buy the 7D jus for the 60fps in video?

    Thanks.

I recently went through the same decision, and it is not so cut and dry that the 5D mk II is a "better" camera. It is full frame, but there are drawbacks to it as well. The main factor for me, that made me decide to go with the 7D, was the much improved auto-focus on the 7D as compared to the 5DmkII (see Tony Wu's comparison here: http://www.tonywublog.com/20100312/underwa...on-eos-7d.html). The dual digic processors in the 7D also allow for much higher fps.

I am not sure the 60fps would make me pick one over the other for me personally and what I am looking for, more so since the 5D Mark II has the recent updates to firmware with the additional frame rates. I did purchase my 5D Mark II prior to the 7D release however and probably would have gotten the 7D if for nothng else other than the fact I have EF-S lenses. But for the things I use my 5D Mark II for, all above water right now, I really like it. I have not shot the 7D, though I am considering picking one up to be my new cropped frame camera.

Like all things, there never seems to be one camera that does everything I want. Today if I was picking up a camera and can only pick one between the 5D Mark II and the 7D (and could not bring two bodies along) I would in all likelihood pick the 7D to cover more of what I generally shoot overall. Though the thought of shooting the 5D Mark II in Cenotes and other things does make me misty-eyed :)

  6. The 7D is a great bargain. AF is good, it is actually more feature ridden than the 5D2, underwater it is easier to shoot with small domes WA and macro. And it's about $800 cheaper than the 5D2.

Now the 5D2 has the ISO performance in video and stills, the picture (to me) looks better than the 7D at all ISO and the DOF is shallower with the FF sensor. I won't shoot 24fps straight off but use 30fps anyhow and slow it down to 24fps for underwater scenes, especially action shots where every happens so quickly. It also requires more expensive lenses to shoot and is generally more expensive for housings etc anyhow. The FF sensor is why you buy the 5D2, none of the other features are a match to the 7D (since it is a newer model). I've had to throw out a few lenses because of the 5D2 because it's just not sharp enough for the sensor. Which is a pity but that's life in the fast lane.

With the 7D uw, you have choice of TTL optical cables and sync cords.

That said, the 7D has overheated on me a few times shooting video. Dual Digic IV chips have a price in heat. Not the 1D4 though.

  7. That said, the 7D has overheated on me a few times shooting video.

Interesting, read that in some places, but not from someone I "know." Any particular conditions/time that you noticed when this would occur?

  8. if you're mostly shooting macro go with the 7D, if it's mostly wide and available light, the 5D2

for land i'd go for the 5D2 (which i have for land) for the better choice of high quality wide to normal lenses - but i haven't tried a 7D - yet

the nice thing about the 7D is that you can pretty nearly have 2 bodies for the price of one 5D2 - and i feel a lot more comfortable with a spare on dive trips

  9. You would have to REALLY need full frame for a particular reason to go with the 5DmkII. Low light performance maybe, or shallow DOF.

For general UW use for most users, the 7D is so very well featured... and I agree will be easier to shoot underwater given the small chip, lens selection and port optics issues.

And you could get two kits... one for UW, one for topside, so you can get a more rounded coverage of your trip.

And the option of 50/60fps 720p.

I've just sold myself on a downgrade...

  10. i am new to the dslr world and chose the 7d. one thing that helped me choose is the ablility to use the tokina 10-17 lens

  11. Interesting, read that in some places, but not from someone I "know." Any particular conditions/time that you noticed when this would occur?

Could this overheating be worsened by the enviromental sealing of the camera, not allowing sufficiant heat escape?

  12. Interesting, read that in some places, but not from someone I "know." Any particular conditions/time that you noticed when this would occur?

I had the same situation. Just shooting on a dive. Just a typical reef dive in relatively shallow water. It took me a while to realize it didn't make a difference whether if I was recording or not. Just turn the camera off during down time and it really wasn't a big issue.

  13. Thansk so much for your help, people!

Because is dificult to be sure about this kind of choises if you are a begier, like me.

But, I think that I will buy the 5D MarkII... ¿some lens to recomend for this body?

    Thanks again!

  14. If you want shoot WA take 16-35 or a bit cheaper 17-40. for macro I would take 100mm. I must mention that on 5D MK2 I tried prime lens 24mm 1.4 for video shooting, and the result is amazing (and bit expensive:)

  15. unless you really need f2.8, i'd recommend the 17-40 on the wide end. it seems to be generally true (and my experience as well) that the wide-medium zooms can have substantial sample variation, most often resulting in low resolution at wider apertures on the left or the right (and the resolution on the edges isn't stellar to begin with) - and this asymetry varies with focal length - for example my 17-40 (presently at Canon for warranty repair) at 17mm is soft on the right edge at f4 and f5.6, truly terrible at 24mm, and soft on the left edge at 40mm. the problem mostly goes away at f8.

although you should test any lens before accepting it (and particularly before letting it get out of warranty), it's particularly important to take some time photographing a brick wall with the zooms if you want the results possible with a 5D2

both the old and new 100 macro lenses are great - if you plan on doing much with it on land, the new IS is probably worth the money (but the old 100 is pretty cheap used). i use the 100 on a 20D and think i would find it a bit short on the 5D2. if you want the macro for really little stuff you may be better off with the 180. i find the poor autofocus of the 100 with a 1.4x makes this an unsatisfactory option in my opinion (there's a thread or two on the 100 with 1.4x)

  16. Hello!

I have both a 5D mark II and a 7D. I am in the market for an underwater housing for one of the 2. as of right now my intention is to use the 5D mark ii with the cannon 15mm fisheye. Any suggestions for good housings? in the past ive shot with a giant equinox hd10 for panasonic hpx-170, recently made the switch to the DSLR world. keep in mind this will be used in swimming pools as well as in lakes for water skiing and wake boarding, also some surf footage in the atlantic ocean. at the moment i do not intend on diving with it....but who knows. Also, i am shooting video, may take some stills for fun but the focus is video.

    Thanks!!

  17. I have both cameras, had originally thought of housing the 5dmk2 (Jean will vouch for the number of questions I asked him!). I've used both topside to generate saleable images, so both will hold up IQ wise. I ultimately decided to house the 7D, the main reasons: Being able to use the Tokina 10-17, Better AF than the 5dmk2, Cheaper (in case the "F" word happens), more pixels per square mm for those macro shots.

You can't go wrong with either one, only you can really decided which to use UW. BTW, I went with the Aquatica A7D housing, shooting manual S&S YS120s.
