Silverbanks Rowdy Group Action

  1. One of the coolest whale behaviors to witness is the so-called Humpback rowdy group action when a bunch of males are essentially having a happy hour bar fight over a female. The action can be intense and chasing these groups as they beat the crap out of each other is quite an experience. Here are a few pics from one of these encounters. These are uncropped so as you can see we were right on top of these guys much of the time. Look at some of the dorsal fins torn to a pulp probably by a swinging barnacle encrusted pectoral fin. A couple of these are out of focus, and I post them just to show the behavior - like the guy surfacing with his mouth expanded with water, maybe trying to intimidate, and another partially torn dorsal fin.

  3. OK, that is close.

I just watched a show on humpback taken in Tonga. Very cool to learn more about the social behaviours.

    Thanks for posting these
