Hello, all. This is not related to underwater photography, but it is related to travel. I have 8-10 days, and am thinking of heading to Iceland to drive around the country. Anyone have any tips? This would be during mid to late April...
Thank you!

ugh ... this april ?
great time to go .. erupting volcanoes and for the first time ever having some economical issues making it affordable to go there !
I would love to go .. but doubt I can make it happen at short notice so recently after getting married and travelling around myself. I will keep an eye on this thread though.
Yeah, like, in 2 weeks or so. I want to go now because it seems cheaper, and it would be great to see the volcanoes. ![]()
Can't help you a lot - surely you have to think about diving that lake with the fantastic vis?
It will be drysuit though.
Pretty sure Peter Rowlands of UWPMag has been there and wrote it up though Eric.

Hi Eric
I would suggest getting info from landrover forum lr4x4.com or defender2.net.
Iceland is a iconic landrover offroad destination and a lot of the fellows on the forum have been there either driving from UK or hiring their 4x4 there. You will find a vast amount of useful information from here.
I might be even tempted to drive my Landy there ![]()

There is quite a nice write up on Luminous Landscape - Linky link
Caveats
1 - was a trip aimed at medium and large format photography
2 - was in 2002
Might help provide a little info, but really is aimed at land photogs. They were camping as well, so not a huge amount of info on the various towns

I'll check out those forums. It's been hard to get information from Europe because it seems like the entire damned place was closed for Easter week.
So... how does someone from the UK drive their Landy there? ![]()
Sounds like a great trip, Eric, and a great time to go!
Consider putting aside some time to check out some of the Icelandic music scene?

Hey Eric
Land Rovers can swim!!!!!!

We were there for a week a couple of years back (June). We hired car and drove around the Keflavik/Rekyavik area. Spectacular scenery (inland and coastal). If you go, would recommend you dive Silfra for a unique (if cold) experience. More info at:
Is really interesting place to visit and explore.
Eric,
Interesting place, worked with the Icelantic Coast Guard while there, you should be there at the start of the dry season. Tripod recommended for night sky's and practice hand and eye for capturing Pufins.
Have a good trip

Drive up to Aberdeen, catch Ferry to the Shetlands (stop for a cup of tea) then off to Faroe islands and then from Faroes to Iceland --about 24 hour ferry trip , from Island it goes to Norway and back to Aberdeen .

Time wise a cheap flight and a 4x4 rental might be the way to go, if you have time to spare this could be a trip of epic proportions.
Hi Eric, we did a Tour of iceland last july. My photo's from this trip (mostly above water, but do check out Silfra if you have the chance.) are on

This trip took us two weeks, so of you would want to do à full circle of the ring road, you have to race. For this a 4 x 4 os not needed, Any cheap car will do.
With 8 days, you have to make a selection. We based our stuff we wanted to see on the lonely planet guide, which was quite good. I would suggest going to the south coast, looking for the iceberg lagoon and spending time in Thingvellir national park. The only drawback of the last is that this is a more popular destination, but i am sure it is not crowded in two weeks time. If you like bird watching, do go on that bird ezcursion by hay wagon (although it migjhWe were very lucky with the weather, the icelanders themselves say that if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes (it might get worse).
I am sure you will enjoy it!

I hope you didnt book Eric !!!!!!
Mind you if you was there when it kicked off I am sure you have the money shot.

I wish we had been able to book something to arrive before the volcano went, but it didn't work out. In Hawaii, instead. ![]()
What is it with you and volcanic islands? ![]()
