Tokina FE Better in Bad Viz?

5 posts
  1. Last weekend we were diving up in Sidney in very poor conditions, rather silty. I decided to push myself and go ahead and shoot w/a wiht my Tonika 10-17 and experiment with strobe angles to reduce backscatter.

I was using two S&S YS-110a's with my Nauticam D300s and S&S Optical Dome Port.

I was amazed while shooting to see that backscatter was much, much less than when i shot with my Sigma 17-70 previously. I think that the FE lens is so curved that it doesn't "see" the light coming back directly into the lens so much. I did see it on the edges, so these shots have a slight crop. I had the same result with CFWA shots.

It was still pretty hard to get enough light on the subject (my dive buddy) and not either get hotspots on the rocks or backscatter. But all-in-all I was quite pleased with the experiment. While these shots are nothing to write home about, they at least came out fairly clear and sharp, IMHO. They actually look better than we were seeing in "real life".

I'm interested in what other's experiences are...? Comments and tips appreciated.

  2. Wider lens. Get closer. Less water (and particles) between lens and subject. Less backscatter.

I gave a talk this week about techniques for reducing backscatter in low viz diving and "going one lens wider" is a classic. I covered 12 others in the talk, with several examples of each.

  3. And the other 11, besides strobe positioning are?

    ;-)

  4. Alex is right (as usual ;) ). Get as close as possible, and handhold at least one of your strobes as far as possible from the camera. But why not show some of the 'bad' (backscatter) pics?

    Cheers Al.

Sounds like you're doing fine Jack. My tokina 10-17mm shots in low-vis usually look much better that what I was seeing in "real life"
