Nikon 60mm in Nauticam housing for D90 + Kenko 1.4

  1. Hi,

I have bought the 60 mm AFS for a first lens, and now, I'm looking with which port I'm gonna use it. Much later, I wanna use a 105 mm AFS, so I have a problem as to which configuration to choose in the port chart for Nikon.

    Configuration 1: compact port base + compact port 30 + N60G-F

    Configuration 2: macro port 60 + N60G-F

And for the 105 mm AFS :

    Config 3 : compact port base + compact port 50 + N105VR-F

    Config 4: extension ring 30 + macro port 60 + N105VR-F

    Config 5: macro port 87 + N105VR-F

So from that, I can take config 1 with 3, or 2 with 4. Config 5 doesn't seem interesting. 2-4 seems the more optimal, and 1-3 useful if I use other lenses, which I dont know yet if they might be useful to me.

    Which one would you recommend?

And in an other topic, will the new Kenko 1.4 work on the 60mm AFS? Didn't have a lot of review on it, and it seems there is a few issues with it!

    Thanks.

  2. I currently have the 60mm AFS and decided to go with the macro port 60. It is one piece and is one less o-ring to worry about than with the compact port base and compact port 30. I did not get the focus gear as the AF is fine for me with this lens. I may consider the focus gear when I get the 105VR. When I do get the 105 lens, I can just add the 30mm locking extension. If you plan to use both lenses this may be the optimal configuration with less ports and accessories to use for both lenses. You could go with the compact port base and compact 50 for the 105 mm and it would also work with the 60, but that again is 2 pieces to use the 60 and also reduces the focus distance from the end of the port, which means having to get a little closer and possibly risk spooking your subject. Also, the macro port 60 has 67mm thread on the end to use diopters with other lenses. I don't believe the compact ports do. It has been noted before that is is not recommended to use diopters with the 60mm as it reduced the lenses working distance too much, but ability to add diopters may be useful with other lenses you may use later. Also, I could be wrong, but I understand that there are issues with AF when using a TC on the 60mm AFS lens. Not sure if the newer TC's resolve this issue.

    Kenko 1.4 will not work with 60mm AF-S. Only with 60mm AF-D.

This info from Kenko 1.4x instruction manual

  4. Merlinus,
