I'm looking for a compact digital camera (3M) to use primarily under water.
The cameras I found which suit my budget are:
1. Sony DSC-P5
2. Olympus C-3040Z
3. Canon PowerShot s30
Any recommendations as to which camera to buy (or not to buy)?
Some factors that look important to me: using the waterproof case, macro options, optional accessories (lens & strobes).
Thanks

You've apparently done some homework as all three of these cameras have relatively inexpensive housings available for them. The Olympus has more higher-end housings, but that doesn't sound like what you're interested in. All three can operate with slave strobes in their inexpensive housings -- none would be hard-wired to the strobe. Currently, the Oly gives you the most accessory options as wide-angle and close-up lenses are available right now for the Olympus PT-010 housing. Only drawback I would see with the Oly is the SmartMedia. I have a C-4040z and feel fairly limited by the maximum 128MB SmartMedia size. The format seems to have stalled out, though Olympus and Fuji have stuck by it. If you decide on the Olympus, drop me a line -- I'm getting a deeper-water housing for my C-4040z and am going to sell my PT-010 soon (I always try to offer things to other forum folks before throwing them to the eBay wolves).

I suggest to buy Canon EOS 40D camera. this is really a good camera i ever used. it has 135 mm lens & very nice optical zoom with 4.8 x. furthermore, it also supports microdrive. i have read digital camera reviews from below link. it's very good site providing online reviews for free.

i look up dpreview on powershot S30.. that's a 2001 model. will you still be able to find housing for the camera?
you can also check out the popular U/W camera Canon G9 since G10 just came out to the market some ppl might look for upgrade and maybe u'll be able to get a good deal for it.
another advice make sure there's a U/W housing available before u get the camera.
hope this helps

Just noticed the original posting is dated way back in 2002. I guess the question may be not be relevant anymore.
while we're at it, can i ask opinion on fujifilm f31fd... is it a good underwater camera?
i've seen on amazon they still have the housing available.. lets assume it is still available.. i'd like to know comments on that camera.
