Selecting Strobe for Canon G9

  1. I own canon G9 with canon underwater house. I use on board flash but it only works in clear at water other wise I get back scatter. And lot shot were I can't use the flash I am force to use iso1600 because of movement.

So I am looking for extrale strobe.

    • Guide number of at lease 20m(air)
    • Back scatter at minimum(it is here more dust than water)
    • Option to have simple manual control(1 stop)
    • Exporse compestion in at least one way
    • Should be to hard to make it in to a double setup later
    • Easy arm
    • Budget 400-500 euro complete set
    • Focus/aiming light
    • Option: also to work with replacement of canon 50D with ikelite house in the future(3-5 years)

I already check some and I like the Sea&Sea YS-01 flitser.

    Which one do you recommend.

  2. Inon strobes, either the compact D-2000 or the more powerful Z-240 ..... Look them up at www.divervision.com

They are a little out of my budget(d-2000 630/700 euro set and z-240 750/800 euro set -> http://www.onderwaterhuis.nl/winkel/flitse...rpakketten.html (dutch)) but If it is worth I prepare to buy it.

Except from the guide number is there a other different between D-2000 and z-240?

    How long will last a flash(~50-100 dives/year)

    Are there cheaper alternatives.

    Marc

  4. Marc,

the D-2000 and the Z-240 are the sime size and weight, the basic difference being that the Z-240 has an higher guide number and can be connected also via eletrical sync cord; assuming you will be connecting your strobe with fiber optics I would buy the D-2000 .... should you need to buy a tray, handle and arm system as well here is a nice package http://www.divervision.com/catalog/-p-392.html that I bought for myself a coulpe of years ago. If you need just the strobe head follow this link for the D-2000 http://www.divervision.com/catalog/-p-43.html and this link for the Z-240 http://www.divervision.com/catalog/-p-189.html

If you service the strobes properly they will last forever, until you get bored or you want to buy a more powerful one !!!

  5. My D-2000 is from 2007 and has about 150 dives made and i am still very pleased with it.

No problems so far and he still goes strong!

The D-2000 has all you want and something more.

I would not buy a Z-240 because the slightly more power is not worth the extra price.

If you would like to connect it electrically then it may be a option.

Cheaper solutions are the Intova or the Bonica strobe, but i have no experience with them.

    Bonica: http://www.bonicadive.com/product_info.php...d8917533b2e9c66

    Intova: http://www.intova.net/slavestrobe.html

To reduce backscatter you have two solutions:

    1. dive in clearer waters

    2. very long arms to illuminate the object from the side(s), but with 1 strobe this will create "ugly" shadows

Shooting makro show less backscatter than wide angle because there are less particles in front of the lens.

For 500 Euros for strobe, tray and arm the only solution would be Intova/Bonica or a used one.

If a used strobe uses normal batteries (like the D-2000) you won't have problems to replace a worn

    and expensive accu pack.

Opt for buying in the USA or Asia, you may save a lot of money...

  6. I think D-2000 will be it.

I find kit that include follow:

    * D-2000 strobe

    * Inon YS-mounting system

    * Inon optical cable

    * Dyron tray and flex arm

I think I need some other kind of mount and optical connector but I belive that is include in price of 629 euro.(I will send them a mail)

    Is this good option?

    I am not fan of it(shipping 50 euro + 19% TAX)

    Other question:

If you set you camere to iso 100 and f4 and distante of 1 meter, is guide number 20m enough in water with 3 meter of sight.

    Marc

  7. Marc,

yes that's a nice price but a flex arm may be not very confortable as you need a long arm.

A 2 piece aluminium arm is better because you can fold it in half for storage/swimming.

Yes, GN20/ISO100 and F4 is more than enough for 1 meter distance except for wide angle.

    Check this: http://www.digital-dive.de/product_info.ph...-Armsystem.html

I bought my first uw-cam from him and was pleased about the service.

You can drive there and pick it up, it's near the dutch border.

What other hardware do I need to connect to my Canon G9 housing(canon WP-DC21)?

    Will diffuse help?

Now just getting an other 200 euro to get it.

  9. Something what just pop up in my mind.

Will the D-2000 work with Ikelite DSLR housing(canon 50D or replacement)? Which what I want do in future(3-5 year).
