some stuff you don't see every day

  1. thought I'd give you Lembeh divers some competition in the critter stakes  ... with some shots from the (relatively) cold waters of Jervis Bay !

These little squat lobsters are what have me picking wet pixel brains about super macro !

the lighting needs some work ... but I like the critter :)

  2. I lurve weedy sea dragons. They are pretty rare and unique, except in JB where they are like flys!!

    Taken with a Nikon F70 + Nikkor 60mm + Subal Housing + YS90 Duo

    Jervis Bay April 2003

Does anybody else have some shots of unique cold water critters?

  3. Cold water? If it doesn't make my soap lather instantly i'm getting out!

    Nice dragon btw.

  4. Beautiful dragon!

    Just how cold is it?

  5. wow ! a beautiful Galathea sp. !

have never seen this pattern before

thanks for this picture ! hope you'll be able to make more of this one (in dorsal view, so I can tell you more about its identity) :freak:

its not that cold ... only gets down to about 15 degrees celcius ... still not the tropics :)

But most people think of the GBR when diving in Australia. In the temperate waters of the southern coast the life is a lot different. A lot of sponges, acidians and bryzoa and no coral to speak of. Its really different and can even be more diverse than some of the tropical dives. Thats why I make the distinction of cold water :)

The weedies are so cool. I searched for them for years further up the coast but they were too elusive. First time I saw one i was :o

    LOL in dorsal view !!! .... don't I wish ...

these tiny guys live amonst a rather intricate bryzoa ... flat out getting a shot of them from the side ... not that I wouldn't like to :D

Still I am determined to get a better shot and am fascinated as I have never seen a photo of these guys before. I like that something so cute can be under your nose for so long ! Since this one I have also spotted a nice pink and yellow clawed one inhabiting a different bryzoan as well.

    cheers

here's a pic of an ascidian from JB ...

  7. oops

  8. its not that cold ... only gets down to about 15 degrees celcius ...

    Some simple arithmetic:

    15 C = 59 F = C-O-L-D!

Way too cold for this Caribbean diver!

  9. gotta say i prefer it when its over 17! 19 degrees is warm water
