Gorillapod tripods - Do they sink?

14 posts
  1. Hi All

I have a Gorillapod flexy tripod that I'm going to mount a strobe onto and then drag into the depths. The question is simple; are they negatively buoyant? I would hate to get things set up only to see my remote strobes heading surfaceward.....

YS-90 and YS-30 will be fitted.

In case you don't know what a Gorillapod is, here's a link to the Joby page

  2. The reason the Focus sinks is because it contains aluminum parts. The next one down in size is the Zoom, made of plastic. Wouldn't the plastic one stand up to the saltwater a little longer? About half the cost too. Just guessing, I have no experience with them.

Another option by the way is the ULCS tripod adapter for about $37 US, photo shows arms that aren't included. You can add the arms of whatever length you'd like.

  3. How do I connect a ball joint to either a gorillapod or an ULCS tripod adapter to fit my Inon Z-240 ???

Thank for the help ..... Francesco

Here are a couple pictures of how I did this. I used a ULCS 1/4 20 female stud on the Gorillapod and then just clamped right to it.

I added the pistol grip handle so a diver could carry it like a dive light. I ended up using a regular Ikelite mount on the strobe which takes a 3/8" bolt if I remember correctly. The pistol grip and ULCS ball it is connected to is for a Fix focus light. I had to drill both out just a bit to accommodate the bolt and wing nut size. I also ended up using blue Loctite on the bolt and wing nut.

I've since used cave line to attach the snap ring and added an Ikelite mount to a leg of the tripod to mount the slave for travel. My sync cord is just wrapped around a leg of the tripod and I unwrap however much I need.

I tested it this weekend on one dive in Lake Huron to 115 feet and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately I only had about a 10 minute or so bottom time and the wreck I was on didn't really lend itself to a remote but everything worked great.

  5. Andy, which kind of Gorillapod did you buy ???

    I have the SLR Zoom.

  7. That's pretty slick Andy, the handle is a nice touch.

Francesco, a similar ball adaptor (1/4 -20) just screws onto the ULCS tripod clamp. There is a shot in the ULCS catalog on their website

    Have fun,

Thanks Steve. Of course I take the tripod off when the diver is carrying it. I wanted something I could use on a tripod or off on any given dive. So both the light and the tripod have bolt snaps attached.

I looked at the ULCS tripod clamp, and while I'm a huge fan of their products, I couldn't justify spending 3x or more the amount. And with the Gorilla pod you can wrap the legs around something if needed. It's a better solution IMO.

I agree, the clamp probably only makes sense cost wise if you already have spare arms you can use. I can see where wrapping the legs around a rock would be a real help if you can do it safely.

  10. I'm intending to butcher up a couple of surplus locline bendy strobe arms and make em fit the Gorillapod tripod mount. A 1/4" UNC helicoil kit is on its way...

And yes, I'm using the SLR version.

what is the number of the part that actually attaches to the gorillapod, the initial ball that the clamp attaches to? (i am assuming it's the tripod screw that came with the pod, or did you mod it?)

at the moment i am using a slr zoom, but i'm going to start using the focus due to the negative buoyancy. anyone tried taking the ball head underwater? will the bubble spirit level implode (not really an issue if it does, but might give me a scare), and will the ball seize up after a few dives?

This is the one that Reef Photo recommended to me, works great. Brian
