BC Salmon Shark Rescue

  1. I was just browsing some blogs that I check out on occasion and came across a video where a couple of surfers tried to rescue a beached and exhausted juvenile salmon shark. Who would have though, a couple of surfers trying to rescue a miniature great white "look a like". Some quick thinking by a couple of tourists had the shark placed in their trunk and moved to calmer waters where it appears to have been successful rescued. Given the dire situation sharks are facing worldwide, it's nice to see a ray of hope.

It is very dependent on the species and I wouldn't recommend having a shark out of water for very long (5 minutes IS a long time). I am pretty impressed with the salmon sharks toughness though. It probably has something to do with their ability to thermoregulate and their blood's ability to hold large quantities of oxygen.

    cheers!
