Just ordered my S & S MDX 5D2 and have just noticed that the housing comes with a 6 pin synch connection as standard. Does anyone know why this is. and what use they have. I know that you can have them changed ( for a price ) to 5 pin, but surely they should come with 5 pin as standard. Have I got this correct or am I more drunk than I think I am.

My guess is that they are thinking you want to add a TTL converter. For that to work with Canon you need all 6 pins connected. Does it only have one bulkhead? On mine there was a 6 pin for the converter and a 5 pin Nikonos.

HI Bill. It says on the S & S web pages that it is factory fitted with a 6 pin and a 2 pin. My old S & S housing for my 350D come with 2 x 5 pins.
I guess they want me to buy the convertor as well. Trouble is I like shooting full manual.

You can buy a nikonos 5 pin connector probably for $90 or so and swap it out.

I was thinking of that Bill. I have ordered the TTL as well so when all the goodies arrive I can have a play and decide what is best.
Cheers for the reply.

What you can do is use the six pin for ttl converter and, when you want to use it full manual, use a little bit of tape on the hotshoe to leave only trigger and ground. It is a very easy, fast and convenient solution.
The 6th pin is indeed for the TTL converter that they manufacture, as it so happen its located in the center and can only be activated if using the converter which has a contact in the center of the plug as well, any other sync cord with 5 pins will just push the spring loaded pin in the center out of the way and life goes on, as far as I know, switching your strobe in manual and using standard 17100 sync cord from sea & Sea should be interpreted by your camera as a full manual setup. I anyone knows this to not be the case, please chime in.
I'm curious to know if there is as we are eventually going to implement this on the Canon camera housing that we manufacture with a slight variable, both will be 6 pins up until they pass through a switchboard then we let the user select between 2 and 5 or 2 and 6 or just plain ol'e manual 2 and 2.
