A day of freediving

  1. I took my setup out freediving with a friend last weekend. Still experimenting and shooting ambient light; waiting for strobes. Thing about shooting freedivers is that it's always a similar subject, so things can get a little stylized.

Main issue with these is the amount of floating material in the water.

  2. interesting results, that turtle has nice colours. Try to get the diver directly in between the sun and you for the best results on the silhouette shot third from last, the diver blocking the sun will tone down the whites

  3. Hey dave O, have we met before ( hsd) ?

    the diver looks like Jeremy.

A few tips for free diving/ spearfishing photography

    * the braining a fish photo is overplayed, everyone with a p&s camera gets that shot. And it really speaks nothing towards you as a photographer. Even though looking back at the photo I might choke on those words as your composition is pretty nice with the roi slightly off center.

    * The great thing about freediving is that we experience the entire water column. Reflecting this with wide shots and something of interest on the bottom will add nice bit of depth and wow to the photo.

    * I found out that its better to separate "spearing days" and "photo days" I would often plan out my photo sessions with paul, have very specific game plan. Days that he wanted to spear I would bring the camera just incase we found a new location or idea I wanted to test out before we actually did a shoot. By doing this my results ended up light years ahead of what they were.
