Phase detection in a compact?

  1. This wont kill off underwater DSLR's of course but could be a big change coming? I know focus speed has often been the thing Ive found most attractive about DSLR's rather than image quality, given most of my images are posted online anyway.

Interesting. Can't wait to see what the tests actually reveal on focus speed. That type of focus speed would make it real attractive to carry on a trip as a back-up unit, or on trips where I just don't feel like carrying as many things

  3. I'm also hoping this technology might make a much better live view at the DSLR scale with true phase-detect focus as well. Sort of like how Sony is doing it with their "SLT" cameras (A33 and A55), but with the phase-detection on-chip taking the place of the translucent mirror in live-view.

Or, imagine a mirror that was a variable translucency via LCD or something: in standard operation with an OVF, it reflects light to the phase-detector in the VF tunnel. Take the shot and the LCD 'shutters' clear instead of the mirror slapping. In live view, the LCD mirror just shutters clear and the main sensor takes over the PDAF functions.

Best of both worlds!! Well, assuming the LCD mirror can be made 100% to 0% reflective for neither viewfinder dimming nor light-loss during the shot, and can cycle fast enough to not add to the shutter release delay.

  4. Great news! ;)
