White balancing the green out

9 posts
  1. I have Sony XR 520 in a bluefin housing, this camera has a lot of extra green pixels,I found that from L&M, it sucks i didnt find that out before I spent $ 6000.00. I just got back from Tobago and most of the video wasnt usuable because of so much green. Im am leaving for the Galapagos in the morning, does anyone know what is the best color to use for MWB to get the green out. I am also using L&M LEDS 2000. When I was in Tobago, I used a white slate, sand, white slate with red filter on, with red filter on and lights on. I never could get the green out. Another thing is that the camera cannot MWB unless the red filter is on, my old TRV 900 worked perfectly far as MWB. Any help I would realy appreciate it.

  2. What you need is a Magenta colored filter or a green filter. URPro has one here.

Thinks. I am leaving for Galapagos in the morning. I wouldn't have time to get one in by then

I have the 550 so I assume that it's response to MWB is similar to the 520. I guess that Sony have changed the WB algorithm in these 5xx camcorders because my Sony HC3 was different.

I have found that it does not MWB from a white slate or fin very well at all. MWB off white objects blows out the reds. I got best results doing a MWB off something with plenty of red in it. Brown coral reef seems to give the best results.

But, if the scene is dark (early morning), you have 3 choices, all which need some effort in post-prod to solve: either leave it on auto, MWB by pointing up to the sun or doing a MWB in shallow water then leaving it set like that.

Don't worry too much about getting perfect WB underwater as, if you are using a decent editor, you can solve most problems later.

Good luck and enjoy the Galapagos.

    Hi Larry,

When the good stuff comes along, just remember two things:

    1. Focus

    2. Framing

    Everything else does not matter...

I have been using premier CS4. I have been playing with color correction without any luck, I'm not sure where I should go In the program to do that. I found auto color, fast color correction, three way color correction. I have a lot of good footage from Malaysia that has the green in it. I havnt figured how to get it out. My TRV 900 never had this problem.

    Thanks Peter

Can't help you with Premier CS4. I've always used Final Cut.

In Final Cut, The three-way color correction is the way to go. Drag the pointer away from green on each of the 3 color wheels. But not too much. Just enough so that the water turns blue. Usually, the TV will be more blue than the computer monitor.

Once it is blue. How do you get the color back in once you turn the green to blue. CS4 is a complicated program. I was used to Premeire 6.5 then they changed the whole program
