At its invitation-only Canon Expo 2010, an event that is held once every five years, Canon just revealed a very interesting multipurpose camera prototype that has a 4K resolution and a new CMOS sensor that shoots videos at 60 fps progressive. It probably wouldn't take Canon too long to put it into production once they decide to do so.
I remember about two years ago sitting on the boat between dives near Sipadan discussing the likelihood of the Red Scarlet being available within a few months. Well that never happened...still hasn't. Sadly. it's beginning to look like Scarlet's window of opportunity is starting to close rapidly. In the meanwhile the hacked GH1 shooting AVCHD @ 60 mbps or MJPEG @ 100 mbps is continuing to impress many pro users as a "Scarlet substitute".

IMHO Scarlet window of opportunity has closed a long time ago.
Once Canon and other player like Sony or Panasonic enter in the 4k market (if they decide to do so it means that this market is not a niche) a "homely" company as RED has really few oppotunity. Right now we are seeing that, despite of being a well established and renowed brand, Nikon is having some trouble reconfiguring itself with its own sensors trying to follow the new hipe of HD recording camera as GH1, 5D and 7D...
BTW probably it's only a "lab game" but the new world's largest cmos sensor ( http://bit.ly/cHNsG2) demonstrates that when one of this company come to play there's no room for small players.
Very interesting, I don't reckon it will be long before all the major players have working and released 4K cams
Gee will it never end......lol
Better get EDIUS 6, 10bit - 4K editing....out very soon.

I know if you waited for the next best and greatest cam, I reckon you would never end up buying anything

You are like a living advertisement for EDIUS!!
And you are like a living advertisement for cameras, housings, hi tech toys, trips, Mac, FCP, bla bla bla
I know if you waited for the next best and greatest cam, I reckon you would never end up buying anything
Too true.
Then along comes a rare "gift" like the hacked Panasonic GH1...Full manual control, very decent AF, and video quality (at the high mbps settings) that is simply stunning. An order of magnitude better (color purity, resolution, noise) than the best prosumer camcorders. As good as the Pana TM700 is, the image quality of the GH13 (as the hacked model is called) simply blows it away...and the same for the Sony EX3. In fact it is so good that Panasonic have now locked the firmware on the latest production batch leaving the factory...so that it doesn't "compete" with (ie outperform) the new GH2 being released at Photokina.
I doubt if the Pana AG-AF100 will be an improvement over the GH13 in terms of image quality.
I've just got my fourth hackable body ...think I'm set now for a few years till the regular consumer tech catches up.
