Clips getting clipped

I used QT Pro to trim longer clips into 4-sec clips. These were them imported into a project, rather than marking in and marking out longer clips. Once the clips were dragged into the timeline, they were automatically limited to 3.29 sec. The solution is pretty simple, just using longer clips and mark times in and out, but I am puzzled.
