Took a quick trip up to the Adams River here in BC, and I must say the only thing more insane than the number of salmon is the smell of the decomposing salmon.
I know that this entire video isn't "underwater" but I thought the shots that are would qualify it for this forum.
The underwater shots are from a GoPro Hero HD with the EyeOfMine flat port housing.
I'm planning on returning soon as there a many more salmon excepted to be returning, and I thought I'd try putting my 5DmkII in a aquarium as a ghetto housing of sort - just to get shots below the surface.
One thing missing are some bears feeding on salmon
Cheers
Karel
Very cool.
I will be there late next week

Going to be in Vancouver The weekend of the 16th. What is the closest place to go to see the salmon spawning, and possibly take some shots?
Doubt I will have time to make it out to the Island.

The Adams River is a 3.5 / 4 hour drive from Vancouver.
Capilano fish hatchery has easy viewing and if you go mid week its pretty quiet. The coho and Chinook are in right now, as they are in most of the local rivers. The Squamish River near Brackendale is great. The coho are in but the eagles really multiply when the Chum start running in about a month. If you go up to the Cheakamus past the North Shore outdoor school there are a couple of great spots around the Bailey Bridge. Chum will return to the lower end of Makay Creek (by Capilano mall) in late Oct and early Nov. They have a hatchery there that will see it's first returns next year or the year after.
MAN, you beat me to it! The two big things i've been excited about moving to Washington from hawaii was 1, photography school, and 2, the salmon runs. I've been checking every week at our local salmon streams. I don't think I will be getting any until early november. But I do plan on getting into the water with them.
I made a second trip to the Adams River last weekend a took my brand new super high tech $25 semi-housing. Here are the resulting photos.
They're obviously not as good as shots from a true under water housing, but I'm a poor starving student who could only improvise. I ended up going to the local pet store and bought a 5 gallon aquarium, simply cut some cardboard to hold the camera snug against the glass, and for safety I wrapped a pool noodle around it.
Here's some quick footage, it's unedited and not colour corrected, this time using my 5DmkII and a 16-35mm for the underwater shots - put the GoPro to shame!!

Hehee... inventive approach
Chum will return to the lower end of Makay (actually MacKay ) Creek (by Capilano mall)
This is amazing to hear that salmon are back there; I grew up a block away and caught minnows and crayfish in that creek. My brother got in big trouble when he brought home a spawning sockeye there....at least forty years ago. I couldn't figure out why it was all red.
Cheers,

Alex Mustard and I just returned from Adams River. Amazing week and great fun and laughs as always to spend a week with my friend.
A quick image from the first day we hit the water.
