Penguin Baitballs

3 posts
  1. Several people have been trying to take pictures of penguins on a baitball underwater with little or no success. (I stand to be corrected but I think that the BBC team including Roger Horrocks has been trying recently.)

I flew over Table Bay recently and noticed some activity on the water. I took several quick (and poor) shots and only noticed when I looked at the pictures afterwards that it was penguins feeding on a small baitball. Subsequently a friend went there to try and get into the water but as soon as a diver gets within 10m of the penguins they disappear. Frustraaaaaaaaaating!!!!!

  2. He he, the Beeb and porn star fell for dubious marketing. They should've asked the people who've tried before... and failed miserably (like me!)... would've saved them 100k! :)

That's a cool aerial shot. I think penguins in Galapagos are less likely to split as they are somewhat more accustomed to divers. If anyone wants SD of penguins in a baitball, I think I still have the tape somewhere. Did Stevie try to get into the ball?

Yip, Stevie went looking and found more baitballs. He used his best super stealthy "I can sneak up on any unsuspecting yellowtail" technique and reported that the penguins were less than impressed!
