  1. I would like to know your opinion please.

What do you think of using Ikelite DS125 Strobe with my Olympus C5050z

  2. I'm not quite sure about your C5050Z, but it performs great on my C3040Z.

The main reasons why I decided for the DS125 are the 7W pilot light (can be used as main dive light on night dives), the fast recycle time and the battery capacity.

I also spent some more on the flash because I expected it to last longer -technology wise- than the camera/housing.

Until now I did not need its full power since I don't have a wide angle lens yet. I'm still doubting whether to buy an Inon UWL100 plus dome port now, or to use the money later as an advance on an EOS 300D plus housing.

  3. I've got 3 DS-125's and wouldn't trade.........long battery life...........powerful.........I would suggest using the manual controller

  5. Tanks for the help and tips

    I'm a happy owner of a new DS-125 B) B)

  6. Karl, Peter,

Just received my DS125.Did not order the controller.

Can you give me some insight as to the benefits of the controller.

I understand there are 3 settings on the strobe. Do you find having 10

    worthwhile, and under what circumstances?

    Thanks

  7. To use the strobe you need a hardwire connection which is not available for the PT-015 OR you need a controller, either the TTL or Manual version.

As I have never had much luck with TTL lighting, I prefer the manual controller although I normally shoot at 1/2 power.

For more on strobe settings see the following URL.

  8. Along with full power, the DS 125 strobe switch has settings to control three other stops of light, described as 1/2,1/4,and 1/8th power levels. There also exists the TTL setting. The switch, being on the strobe itself, sometimes may be at an arms length distance.

The manual controller, attached to the strobe with supplied cord, is positioned next to the housing. The manual controller has ten settings, from full power to -4 1/2 stops, in half step increments.

The TTL sensor is also positioned next to the housing in a similar manner. It will enable the use of the TTL setting on the DS 125. When used with an Oly c5050 that is set to slave mode, the TTL sensor will also allow full use of the manual settings on the strobe ( full, 1/2,1/4,1/8).

  9. Peter, Bobf,

    Thanks for your comments.

I should have have mentionned that I was using a D100 with no TTL UW capabilities.

Looked at the controller but decided that 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, would probably suffice.

I will connect the DS125 directly to my Aquatica housing with an Ike syncord.

Peter thanks for the link. Very informative.
