Rare Nudi found in Philippines

11 posts
  1. Hey all,

Having dived the area around Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, Philippines, we have found loads of rare and amazing nudis, but this one is still unnamed. Trawled seaslugforum and nudipixel and cant find it, so please help.

I have found it twice now, on 2 sites about an hour by boat apart, once at 32m and once at 25 both times on walls. Its tiny, max 1cm long. The first time it was white, the second a very pale yellow (here) and both had raised white dots. A black ring around the mantle, just inside the edge, black/grey/slightly purple rhinophores and gills.

Chromodoris? Discodoris? ... PLEASE HELP ITS BUGGING ME

  3. Marli,

Thanks so much! So now all i need to do is find another one, collect a specimen, dissect it, describe it, and i have my own Nudi!!

  4. Nope, doesn't work that way. Even if you could do all the work, you can't name it after yourself. It's just not genteel. You have to impress some slug scientist that you're worthy. It's hard. I should know. Trust me.

    Cheers,

    Marli

  5. I'd try to name it anyhow and see what happens (maybe send the pic/info to a slug expert). If you discovered it, you deserve to name it.

  6. Marli,

Ha, i was joking! I know its not that easy! (Did my MSc in Oceanography) But its nice to think that all this diving and searching for these little critters could come to something! I am hoping to do a research project on nudis over the future years (i now live in Philippines) and try to arrange a 'satelite docturate' with my old Uni, (Southampton UK).

I had previously emailed Bill Rudman and Neville Coleman and never had a reply from either. Know they must be inundated with requests like this, but was kinda annoyed that i didnt even get a simple answer like urs. 7 words, and now i know. So thanks again.

I have more pics if u wanna help out? The internet here is too slow to trawl pics online!

Blueline - i didnt 'discover' it, just found it a few times here in the Philippines. Other photos all seem to be from Kenya?

  7. I have more pics if u wanna help out?

Send 'em, and I'll try my best.

  8. Ok, here you go then...

Tiny, less than a cm, 25m down on sand of a good healthy reef. Looks a bit like a Ceratosoma? with the little wing bits? Seemed to have a oral protrusion like botox lips!? (True scientific terms there!)

  9. Yes, That's Noumea flava. It seems that something took a bite out of it.

Best to send ID requests in separate posts; that way they will get more attention.

    Cheers,

    Marli

  10. Thanks for that, actually looking at the Noumea genus page found that i'd misidentified one. A Glossodoris palida for a Noumea crocea, just thought it was a yellower version of pallida (which we have here) , so chalk another species up to my town!

Marli, do you guys know these, cos they are common in ur areas? or are u doing my homework for me and trawling the net? I wonder because having dived one area so much and based here, it is hard to know whether the rare ones here are common elsewhere, or rare worldwide? as DSSPhoto says above, "like the ones in Maui"... Also having compiled a species list for our island we have around 100 so far, and no idea if this is alot, or a few, but guessing cos were in the Philippines it should be fairly high?

Right another one coming ur way, on a new post this time...
