Feel a bit sad for the tuna... it was surely very scared!
And offcourse good that the diver survived the "joyride" as well

Cheers

Just read the article, how do you get a giant tuna caught in your harness????? Sounds a bit fishy to me....(groan...)

I once had a diver use a reel to lower his diver computer down to 300ish feet.
He reeled it back in and came on board the boat and asked me why his computer was beeping (trying to be funny and wind me up)
I just said your computer says you have been a dumb ass and you are dead. If you do happen to feel any tingles or pain .. feel free to come back and I may take you seriously.
But I always wondered why he had a reel with a weight on him. Could imagine some idiot diving a long and trying to fish at the same time, wouldn't be surprising.
We had similar thing happen here about 8 years ago .. dive computer read normal until safety stop and then sudden drop down a hundred feet, plateau out .. and then down another 100feet .. the graph was insane looking !
Gear was rescued days later .. don't know they ever found the body. (i think unless I am mixing up my stories)

It wasn't a harness but a spear gun. The harness was probably a cover story for that idjuts and his crew who were probably spear fishing in a MPA or no take zones, where there are plenty of in PI. I hope they make him pay for the evac and treatment.

I know it sounds strange... Not sure if its really true. Just thought I should share...

Spear fisherman was my first thought as well. Too many rich yahoos there think they're above the law. Saw that happen on my first trip to PG. Big yacht off the pinnacle in Verde Island. They suddenly pulled anchor when all the cameras came out taken photos of the spearguns on deck.
The original owner of God's Pocket here in BC used to hunt the large Pacific Halibut by having a fishing reel on a chest harness, , usually his dive master would wear it, the DM would then snorkel out when the halibut were feeding on the salmon heads fishermen chucked off the dock. He had a pole spear on with a barbed point on it, reel was tied to the hook. He'd pick a suitable fish, and spear it. Since these are monsters..2-300 lb fish, the halibut would take off and the hunter would act as a float. The resort owner would then follow on a zodiac. The hunter wasn't dragged down because his drysuit was fully inflated and he had a lot of line on the reel. But it was still done on snorkel, not scuba like the moron did with Tuna.

When I was in college in TX, there was an article in the paper about a spear fishing diver who disappeared while diving on an oil rig. His buddy was interviewed and he said the last time he saw him, the guy had speared a huge grouper and was trying to tie the line off to the rig . . .
