Nikon Coolscan V ED

  1. I am looking at buying a film scanner (instead of spending long anti-social evenings at other people's places hunched over PCs :) )

The new Nikon Coolscan V seems to be great value for an entry level scanners with 4000 dpi. Does anyone have one / know how they perform?

The marketing blurb has these virtues to extoll ...

A true optical resolution of 4000dpi and 14-bit A/D input conversion

scan an image in just 38 seconds (including image transfer and display).

Digital ICE4 Advanced™, the new and improved digital image correction function

... but are they good things?? Particularly the ICE - which is supposed to remove dust & scratches - does it work? is image quality affected?

    cheers

  2. I don't know about the Coolscan V, but I've had a Nikon Coolscan IV ED for several years, and it's been just great.

  3. Hi,

Just wondering if you made the purchase and if so how you are finding the scanner ?

    thanks,

  4. Check the blues

I've been using the Nikon 4000ED for years and I'd be very interested to see if the new model does a better job of handling the "blues". Although its an all-around great scanner, the 4000ED did a lousy job of capturing those blue water images that transition from the light white blues of the sun, through the rich cyans of shallow water, into the dark blues of depth. Even with digital (ROC) restoration of color settings recommended by Nikon, the scanner just can't get those colors right. Another thing to note would be the speed of the scanner. How fast can it scan a 35mm at full res with digital ICE, GEM and ROC turned on? This is another place where the 4000 really falls to its knees. If you scan at 16 bit, that also will take much longer. If anyone has one, I'd love to do some comparison tests between the two (and of course will share the results here).
