I am looking at getting a strobe for my camera, but due to finances am limited. I am debating between getting 2 Ikelite DS-51's or 1 Ikelite DS-160. My photography before now has been limited mainly to macro shots using ambient light in around 10-15 feet of water. What I am planning to use these strobes for are manatee shots in Crystal River this winter. I wish I could afford 2 DS-160's, but I just don't see that happening (I plan to research that option a little more). My question is though, would 2 of the DS-51's be better than a single DS-160? I've never shot with a strobe before (I only got my housing this last summer).

Hi!
If You have never shot with a strobe before it might be a good idea to start out with one - learn how to use it and You can get GREAT shots and good lighting.
I would suggest You go with 1 x DS-160 for now and add a second one when You can afford it.
I think DS-51 is OK for macro work but if You want a good strobe for WA as well - go with the more powerful 160.
I went down this road and have not regretted it.

I did the same as Karel - I shot with a single DS-160 for about a year before getting a second one. I learned a lot about lighting and exposure by having only one strobe for both macro and wide angle. Also, I think you'll be happier with the stronger strobe!
Good luck!

That is what I was guessing, but I just wanted to check. Thank you both!
