Olympus C-4040 discontinued?

  1. If it's discontinued it's because, there's a new one that will come out and maybe we will get better housings for the new Olympus that will take the place of the

    C-4040.

I mostly go with Nikon, although the Olympus C-4040 is a very good camera, the problem was that, the housings made for that camera didn't give a full access control of the camera.

We will see with what Olympus will surprise us now !

  2. Sharkeye,

I have to disagree with you on this one. The Olympus PT-010 housing will give you full access to your camera's control.

  3. Call me crazy, but with the speed at which digicams are developing, I don't think I'd commit to buying a model that was being discontinued, especially when you consider the additional cost of a housing. I personally would try and shoot for the most recent *stable* technology available when buying a new digicam.

  4. Uh, call *me* crazy, but I don't think there is such thing as a "stable technology" here -- well, maybe you could get a film camera. There are enough C-xxxx cameras (and housings for them) out there that you won't lack for a replacement should you have trouble. In the grand scheme of things, all that one can do is buy the best camera that fits their individual needs at whatever time they need to (or can afford to) have it. We have lots of folks here who are "still" electing to buy the C-3040, -3030, and 3000 because they represent a good value when coupled with the PT-010 housing!

  5. FWIW, in a followup thread today, someone reported that the 4040 will be replaced by a C-3080, same form factor, but I have not seen anything concrete to that effect.

  6. Allan you are right, sorry about that, I didn't think about that one and you are completely right, i'ved never used that housing, I think I never saw it neither, but if olympus did a housing for there camera I'm pretty sure thay did a good job.

  7. Just a point of clarification on my posting. My intent wasn't to downplay how good or reliable any of the Oly c-**** cameras are at all. In fact, the number of models or c-**** cameras and the number of housings available for those cameras is much larger than the equivalent for the Sony DSC-S* model that I chose to house. I strongly considered the Oly but really liked the MemoryStick media from past use, and more importantly like the Sony battery life, which I can easily get 3 dives out of. Had the Oly used the same battery, I probably would have chosen it because of the availability of more housings, even though I probably still would have bought the Ikelite version.

My point was more that my philosophy when buying *any* electronic device, be it a digicam, a DVD player, a computer, or a cell phone, is to buy the most functionality I can afford at the time. So nowadays that might mean buying a Coolpix 5000, or the Sony 707 if I were to buy a new digicam. If I could afford it at the time, I'd probably go for one of the new digital SLRs over either of those too. The idea (for me at least) is to try to avoid buyers remorse when I buy a X-Megapixel camera and the next day they announce a 2X-Megapixel version, drop the price on the X-Mp, and sell the 2X for the price I paid for my X-Mp. At any given time, there's bound to be something like this that happens, I just personally try to avoid it. Obviously, the two factors here are your individual desire to have the latest and greatest toys and more importantly your budget.

As for my comment about "stable" technology, stable was probably not the best term. What I was getting at was that I would pick something as leading edge as possible, without treading on the "bleeding" edge. It seems sometime that really cool new technology doesn't always make it in the real world, so it's up to the consumer to figure out what will or will not be around, and what's worth the money. In that sense, cameras like the Oly C-**** line and the Nikon Coolpix line are probably some of the most "stable".

Ok, I'll get down off my soapbox now. Sorry for the rant...

  8. Hi all,

Just got off the phone with a good source from japan and he told me that the C4040Z is not discontinued. Though there's a rumor that the olyd40 or c40 will be remodelled with a different body and color.
