Gastropod eggs from B.C.

  1. This is a stretch; Northern Vancouver Island, quite small, each about 1/3 inch long. Any clues would be appreciated. I believe they are whelk egg cases.....

  2. Those are not whelk egg capsules. When I lived in Florida, they used to wash up on the beach all the time. Whelk egg cases look like these;

    Squid eggs?

  3. I am pretty sure that they are cephalopod eggs of some kind.

  4. Here is why I think they are gastropod eggs:

    whelk eggs

    They are way too small for the cephalopods we have in B.C.:

    GPO's and Rubecens octopus are much larger and are laid in dens.

    Stubby squid eggs are the shape of a Dairy Queen ice cream cone, and again far larger.

    The ridges are interesting, and also differ from Cephalopod eggs.

    ???????????

  5. They do resemble the egg capsules of a Nucella. There are several species in the N.E. Pacific. I have seen those of N. lamellosa with the snails but they were in the intertidal.

    Rick Harbo at DFO may be able to help. He has a guide book but not all spp are shown with egg capsules.

  6. Thanks Tom;

    I'm hopefully not out of the park on this one.

    Sorry, I totally missed the size in your first post!
