Sharm Macro

  1. Hi Guys,

well its that time of year again and I can see a trip back to the Red Sea Looming in March. We have already planned to go back to Sharm, but was wondering what the best dive sites were for macro photography. I realised that Dahab/Nuweiba/Taba are better for the macro, but we fancied a couple of Thistlegorm trips as well this time so, Sharm it is. Which sites have people found are best for macro photography....????

  2. Hi,

most sites in the Red Sea have macro subjects it may take time to find smaller subjects, I have done the big wreaks with

60mm/105mm lens & found loads. Just keep your eyes peeled.

  3. I suppose i could go to Ras Nasrani or Middle Garden and take some macro shots of a shark chewing on my arm :-)

On a serious note, are any of the divesites better than others for macro life ? Last time we were there we were too busy doing our AOW so didnt think about the photography, this time the fishies are going to have a serious case of red eye :)

  4. I was there over Christmas, diving out of Sharks bay. We did local the first day (Ras Bob and Ras Nasrani), 3 days at Tiran, then a day at Ras Mo.

In terms of full on macro, they are there if you search, but things like Nudis seemed to be few and far between. I used the 60mm on 3 dives, the 105 on one (but didn't get a chance to actually use it, as a sync cord flooded at the start of the dive:() and a 10-24mm on the rest (7, as we did 11 dives)

Typical subjects I shot with the macro lens were........fish portraits:) Anemonefish, Hawkfish, bannerfish etc. I really didn't find too much small stuff. The odd nudi, but generally in very hard to shoot locations, tucked in to the reef etc.

Things might well be different on a night dive, but we didn't do one this time:)

  5. I must admit I really enjoyed Tiran last time, though with the currents Macro photography was the last thing on my mind :-) Will hopefully do some trips down to Ras Mo this time, and actually enjoy the diving rather than worrying about doing the AOW bits. Unfortunately after 17 dives over in Bali in September, ive been spoiled by the macro, but will definately keep my eyes peeled for the opportunities as and when they crop up in Sharm ! Any suggestions of the best sites are great tho

  6. What liveaboard trip in the south red sea would offer the best macro?

  7. In the past we've found virtually all of the shore dives off Sharm to be decent macro sites, especially if you can find an operator that allows you to potter around and take your time. All joking aside the Thistlegorm can be a cracking macro dive, but you tend to be focusing on other things when you are there! :P

    Cheers, Simon
