Glass Dome Port Replacement??

4 posts
  1. Hi, I have a Gates HC7/HC9 video housing with a wide angle glass dome port. It has acquired a reasonable sized scratch. Does anybody know if I can replace it myself, or fix it? I can find lots of info on fixing acrylic, but not glass.

    Any help is appreciated.

  2. Hiya Tyler

Most of us go for the acrylic domes because if you do scratch them they are reasonably easy to repair. The only way I've heard of a glass dome with a bad scratch being repaired was it being returned to manufacturer for re-polishing. Hopefully someone else may have better news for you.....

    Cheers, Simon

    Hi Tyler,

Unfortunately the only option is replacement of the front element. Not only is the port vacuum sealed (making it unserviceable without special equipment) but the glass is AR coated.

Contact Pamela @ Gates 858-391-0052 for service on your port.

For posterity I just had scratches repaired on both my wide angle and standard ports for my Gates Diego. $138 for both, while not cheap, the cost is reasonable, considering the cost for new ones.
