Where to test drive before buying in Florida or Grand Cayman?

  1. Any suggestions re: an underwater camera shop in the Ft. Lauderdale area or Grand Cayman which will (1) allow you to try before buying (rent to own is fine), (2) offer advice to help configure the system and (3) has a good selection of products?

I have a week in April to test drive and buy a camera set up in/around Fort Lauderdale or on Grand Cayman, prior to hopping on the Cayman Aggressor a week later. My goal is to touch, feel and ideally try a couple difference systems, underwater, before buying. I really want to test shutter delay, get a sense for size of the system, among other things.

I plan to do my research and have my choices narrowed down to 2-3 systems before I go. Probably an "advanced compact" (4/3ds) or starter (or grow-able) DSLR set up. The 4/3's cameras look good on paper and the size is right - but I'm scared of the shutter delay - regardless of what is advertised.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

  2. You can't do any better than http://www.reefphoto.com/ Boy did you pick the right town. I'm not sure about test driving the system, but Ryan and the guys will be great help.

The obvious choice on Cayman is Cathy Church's shop http://www.cathychurch.com/Contact_Us.html I haven't checked the prices there in a while but might be worth a call. Worse case you can stop by the shop and have a boat drink at the Sunset House bar.

    Good luck,

  3. +1 for the knowledge and recommendations of Ryan and the team at Reef.

Living where I do, it isn't exactly my local store but they are my preferred supplier if I have any doubts about the correct bit of kit to buy.

I believe that the usual British option is to book a Shearwater trip, hire a car from MIA and pop in to Reef Photo & Video, test dive at Blue Heron Bridge after dropping your luggage off at the Super-8, eventually pitching up at Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures...

    :D

  6. I would def look into the options in Ft Lauderdale. Quite a few people I know here in Grand Cayman also use Reef Photo, just purely due to the service and the diversity of stock etc. I don't know of any other shops in Ft L ... but there are some in other areas of Florida for sure.

If you are on the Agressor here your time is limited, and so is your choice of what to test dive.

Say hi to Dave on board the Agressor and have a great trip!
