Fibre optic sync cord from audio cable

  1. I've just made up a 10m fibre optic sync cord for a remote strobe setup using digital audio cable.

It works in the backyard but no underwater tests yet, severe lack of vis is causing delays.

Here's a link to a description of the process.

  2. Excellent work.

Another source of fibre is reel ends from network installers at probably around US 50c per metre. You need single mode solid optical cable. Ebay is likely your friend.

First test in less than perfect conditions.

St Leonards Pier. Vis a murky green 5m. With 2 OW scuba classes nearby.

  4. Well done! That looks like good vis compared to where we dive! Wouldn't the strobe trigger anyway in this case if the sensor cap was off?

  5. No. I tested that last week and the remote strobe wouldn't trigger more than 1.5 m away and had to be facing the main strobe. In this photo it's more like 3m away and the sensor is hidden. Also with the sync cord the main strobe can be pointing any direction and at any power.

  6. Nice work Panda

You can also get the Fibre from Cable Chick it's acrylic fibre the same type as inon use.

  7. Another good place to get fiber optic cable is from Fiber optic lighting companies...

found one in the US, but Ive never ordered from here...

It amazes me that you can buy tens of meters of the stuff for a couple bucks, but Inon (and other companies) sell their cables for close to $100 dollars or more!
