Whale Sharks w. Tok. 10-17

  1. Hey all,

Going on a whale shark snorkel this week, first time out with the 7d, so looking forward to it. But got myself confused. Simply with a Tokina 10-17 behind a 8" dome, should i add the 1.4xTC or not?

Considering i will be shooting from 3m away or more will the TC give me better results?

Should i risk a change out half way through? Try a few different options? mmm...

    Any advice would be helpful

  2. I shot using the 100 mm Zen and no TC.

What would the TC do for you shooting whale sharks?

  3. 10-17 mm alone. No TC is needed.

  4. As the others have said, I wouldn't use a teleconvertor for large animals.

The TC is normally used for close focus wide angle, in which the subject is very close to the port, and hence is magnified by the it.

With big animals, I would normally choose to use the 10-17mm at the 17mm end, as this helps minimize the fisheye distortion. The lens should have pretty much all options covered, so you shouldn't need a lens change (except for surface shots).

    Have a great trip!
