strobes for deep dives beyond 100m

  1. Does anyone here have any experience using strobes below 100m??

    Planning on doing a few between 100 to 150m but the problem i have is finding strobes that are depth rated to below 100m. Can find a few that go to 100m but haven't found any for deeper. The aquatica housing with the spring upgrade is fine to 135-140m. Any of you taken them below the rated depth? If it comes to the worst could always try just using the dive lights but is kinda tricky especially when you have got that amount of tanks on you as am not so lucky as to have a rebreather yet (anyone got a spare £5500! hehe)

    Also wondering about the temperature of the strobes. I normally use very cold lights at that depth for the improved penetration though the dives are in warm waters (off kenya).

    Was also wondering if any has any experience taking the subal housings below the rated depth? Can you get upgrades for the housings to take them deeper? I know there are a few harded subal fans here so was hoping to pick your knowledge. I am just about to buy a housing for my 5D mkII and apart from hugyfot going to 100m aquatica seems to be the only one that there is an upgrade for below that.. though that is kinda getting off topic, lets just focus on the strobes as lets be honest.. the ambient light is somewhat lacking at that depth! Will try a post in the relevant housing section for the housing help...

    Any feedback would be much appreciated as i kinda do want to start having to screw about at that depth if you know what i mean.

  2. thanks very much.. will try to get hold of him!

  3. I'll appreciate if you can post your experiences or any info you get.

  4. From the Hartenberger users manual;

    “We guarantee that all Hartenberger strobes are pressure proof to a depth well in excess of 100m (325ft).”

    Just how deep that means???

  5. lol, you gotta like there way of covering themselves... Was hoping to get hartenbergers but all kinda depends on money... when is it ever any different...

    Will let you know how it goes... won't be for a few more months as back in england at the mo sorting life out and fingers crossed getting my rig...

  6. I seem to remember supplying several of the older (film ttl) Subtronic strobes for deep use but I'm pretty sure that whilst they stayed waterproof at 100m+, the controls became locked in place.

    (I'll check with Seacam to find out how deep the current strobes have been used).

    UPDATE: Yes, Seacam produce an 'Offshore' version of the Seaflash 150TTL rated to 200m (at a higher price).

  7. hmm.. thanks for that paul.. shame they are soooo expensive, better just hope that i can sell my flat for the price i want! lol

    Have found a few people who have used their strobes well below the rating and have been ok, just nice to have a bit of security as it would take me forever to have to save up to replace them!

    As per your point above, the Hugyfot optional depth rating is to 150m, not 100m.
