  1. Hi there

Coming from the videography side of the world,i was always interested in stills underwater. However,i usually stuck to the compact digicams which i took while on holiday,my latest one being the Sony W300 with MPK housing and strobe. Now i have bought a new condition Canon 40D camera.I need to know a coupkle of things as i dont know much about the lenses and so on.

    So here goes

What lenses do i purchase if in going to do a wide range of diving

Must i go for a dome port and can any lense work inside,i mean can i use a zoom lens inside the domeport

Does the housings have zoom gears etc

Can a Canon 17-85mmf/4 5.6 USM lens work inside the housing with a dome or standard flat port.

As you can see,i need lots of information

Also on a tight budget as this is a supplement to my video housings,so very limited in the budget department as i will need to buy a housing

Welcome to the inexpensive part of diving (ha).

I would suggest that you get the Tokina 10-17 for wide angle stuff (you will need a dome) and the Canon 60 macro for macro stuff (you will need a flat port). The 10-17 will need a focus gear and all of the housing guys make one AFAIK. Don't forget strobes and arms and a focus light. The 17-85 is an OK lens but these other 2 will serve you much better in my opinion.

I agree that the best bet would be the tokina 10-17 , a 1.4 tele converter a 60mm macro and maybe a 100mm macro. Your lens Canon 17-85mmf/4 5.6 USM lens will require a diopter that will allow it to focus close enough for the dome port but you will loose infinite focus as well as the field of view will be narrower.

You might look at the used market and contact Dave Haas who is a active member here a cannon shooter and a ikelite sales person.

Thanks, luckily im being told about this before i go out and buy the lens,it would also be great if you guys can let me know, what lenses you have in your bag.The Tokina 10-17mm lens was always one that i was going to get for wide angle but was not sure about the other lenses.

  5. as normally is always the case.. depends on how much cash you wanna spend...

I like the look of the new canon 8-15mm fisheye that should be out soon... but i shoot full frame so the tonika is out of bounds for me.

if cash is tight you can pick up some of the old canon 100mm macro lenses for a bargain, was a good lens. That might be a bit long if you are in silty/bad viz as you are cropped sensor so the 60mm macro might be a safer bet. And a TC and maybe a diopter.. how macro you wanna go? super macro? There are lots of people that can give you great adivce on that area here and i am not one of them so will stop :)
