Nat Geo "Capturing the Deep" TV show

  1. I watched the Nat Geo channel yesterday, saw a show called "Capturing the Deep."

Couldn't believe what I saw, over and over:

-dive photographers constantly lying on coral (not sand) to get their shots

-dive photographers standing on coral (not sand) to get their shots

-dive photographers holding onto coral (not rock) to steady themselves for their shots

One diver was trying to get photos of a circling shark. He was lying in coral and rolling all around to get his shots.

Unbelievable. National Geographic gives dive photographers a very bad name.

  2. Should have been called 'Destroying the deep' then :)

    Dive safe, practise buoyancy

  3. I watched it with my heart breaking. David and the other UW Photographer should have edited that footage better. Shameful.

Why should they have edited it? (I did not see it.) But if that is what is happening when the photographers are getting the shot and rolling in coral, hiding it is not in the best interest.

Unfortunately I think we have all seen that type of activity :)

Agreed ... Sounds like some high profile 'Name and shame' :)

    Totally agree!

  7. True,

But it tar and feathers those of us who take huge measures to avoid destruction. I have passed on many great shots because it would endanger critters or topography. MOST of the photographers I travel and dive with do the same. To see two of the highest profile UW photographers blithely stomping delicate corals for a common subject puts a certain "stamp of approval" on that mentality. It sheds that shame on all of us. Just saying......

  8. With Drew away - I thought I'd add a Drew style comment!

While I am in no way condoning the behaviour, which sounds pretty bad, I do think people should see the footage before posting their opinions on the photographers' behaviour in the film. Thought I'd add this before this thread takes off into accusations!

  9. Is it available on the web?

  10.

Watch from the 2:30 mark, on.

    Brian Skerry.

    It is really bad.

Thanks for the link to the video. Thought at some points perhaps it was just the angle (@around 2:00) figuring there has to be some reason. But does not look good. At all.

  12. I watched the four minute clip on you tube. I don't think it is the entirety of what the original poster saw on TV. The complete segment may show more than the short clip.

If what one sees on the You Tube clip makes your blood boil, it is best not to go on a trip with a pro. The few seconds of reef contact on the tape pale in comparison to what I have seen and doesn't show much, if any, destruction.

Again, I have not viewed the full TV show. I think I'll leave now before I get crucified as condoning the wanton destruction of our entire underwater ecosystem.

  13. Does anyone have another link to it as I can't view it here in Oz

  14. Can't watch it in the UK either.

  15. The thing that's so ironic for me is comparing this footage to Brian's column he used to write for Fathoms magazine. It became a turn off because of the soap box he was constantly on. It got to be a bit much reading about how evil man was in every issue.

  16. Hi,

I haven't been able to view the clip (not available in Palau either). Please can the original poster change the settings so that an educated discussion can begin?

  17. Certainly pretty blatant... of course the "drama" helps the clip/film presentation to non divers and NG viewers in general. But the photographer in question's technique is of course pretty shabby overall considering the environment he proclaims to protect.

  18. Cant see it here in India
