Edge Ultra 100 or 200

  1. Does anyone have experiences with these LED lights? Atleast on paper, they look interesting: 9000 lumens per head, 10-100% dimmable, 90 degree even beam and reasonable burn times. My main interest is shooting wideangle video such as wrecks, u/w landscape and caves. No small stuff. Visibility ranging typically between 2 and 10 meters (6-30 feet), sometimes more.

I would be interested to know the CRI value of these lamps and how "good" the video looks, i.e. the quality of light.

    Any other experiences?

Or should I look at HMI lamps?

  2. We has posted a picture on their website comparing the light to a 55w HID. We are also working on a 'promo' video comparing them in the water shooting a wreck. Contact us if you'd like contact info for a customer that has used the system.

  3. I'm a little surprised the EdgeDive doesn't know have the CRI value as part of the info. But if they won't publish this info, then it can't be very high. Anyhow, if 9000lm is the true output, and the CRI is in the high 80s/90s, it's still a competitive price to 200W HMI lights like the PV200 from Pacific Visions, the Halcyon and the Nuytco 200W HMI. Your home grown Heliumizer is a pretty nice light. I'd choose a light with an adjustable beam. In bad viz, a very wide beam just lights up all the gunk in the water and makes shooting hell. I believe Sartek also released a LED lamphead that is claimed at 10000lm.

If you are not travelling with the lights, halogen HLX bulbs are still nice. 400W HLX bulbs pump 16000lm @ 36V and 10000lm @ 250W/24V.

  4. Thanks Drew for the tips. I just returned from a trip to Sardinian caves with almost 70 kg of air travel luggage. Having squeezed through a number of "minor" restrictions whilst still recording continuous video, I realized how good my handheld 1960 lumen Green Force Heptastar LED is in those situations.

Consequently, the more powerful lighting will be for domestic boat or car based diving trips. I have been considering HMI lamps, and heard some positive comments by cave divers. I have also heard concern about availability of quality spare parts. In addition to PV200, Apollo and Nuytco HMI lamps, I have noted Salvo/Light Monkey and Death Ray. I have not yet contacted Heliumizer, but, the word of mouth is that the guy's real work is quite time-consuming.

Provided that the quality of light is/would be good enough the high powered LEDs are becoming more tempting. That's why I am interested in users' experiences (and CRI values) of EdgeDive and Sartek lamps. I have been considering also Keldan Luna 8 LA-V CRI due to its quoted CRI value of 95 and 5 settings. However at 3000 or 4000 lumens it is only slightly brighter than my current Green Force.

  5. Well I will possibly be reviewing the EdgeDive units in a few months. All depends on schedules and shipping :)

  6. Drew, I look forward to your review. Thanks.
