Buying WAL in Hong-Kong or Singapore

6 posts
  1. Hello everyone,

I am planning a business trip to Singapore + Hong-Kong in a couple of weeks.

By the way, I'd like to buy an Inon or Olympus WAL + dome there (for Ikelite Canon G2 housing).

I do not have any clue of where to go over there... where are these WAL the cheapest, HK or SG?

Then could anybody give me an address?

Thanks you for your help !

  2. Hi, I live in HK.

AFAIK there is only one shop in HK which officially carries any Inon stock, they are at www.chinesediver.com. I have only been in there once, and they are not always enthusiastic about answering my telephone enquiries.

Occasionally Diving Adventure in Causeway Bay has something which has been purchased in Japan and brought to HK unofficially.

I order my Inon stuff directly from Japan.

I would think you have some chance of getting the Olympus/UN WAL at ProDive in WanChai (www.prodive.com.hk or +852 28082819), or at Wing Shing Photo Supplies in MongKok (+852 23966886 / +852 23966961). Actually ProDive is the only big dive shop in HK which is really serious about uw photography support. Second best is Diving Adventure.

If you want to call Wing Shing you should try to call weekdays between 11:00am and 5:00pm HK time. They are all open 11:00am-9:00pm 7 days but outside the times I mentioned they will probably be too busy to pay attention and will be very unhelpful. (That's my experience, anyway.)

Of course, not speaking Cantonese, I may have missed something useful.

  3. Thanks Patterns !!

I went to Mongkok this morning but they were out of WAL stock (Wing Shing, Man Shing as well)

Then I went to Pro Dive and found the Olympus PWC 01 there... 40% cheaper than in Paris.

    Thanks again !

  4. Ben,

May I ask you how much it set you back in Hong Kong ?

    Merci.

  5. Glad I could help! Actually it's funny, just this morning - for the first time since posting the suggestions - I was wondering whether you had had any success; but I thought you had already been and gone.

Must have been challenging to get anybody behind a counter in Wing Shing to talk to you on a Saturday!

Oh, re-reading your post I just realised you went in the morning, which is OK even on Saturday; but after about 1:00 it would be more difficult to get anyone's attention ... assuming you could get in the door ... assuming you wanted to try ...

  6. Yes David, you're right, I went there in the early morning... I went back to Mongkok by night (9pm)... just for fun. Actually, I did not believe it !! I had never seen so many people in the street for my whole life !! Sure you couldn't even get into Wing Shing... I didn't know Hong Kong before, but this place is completely crazy...

Reefwreck, I bargained the WAL at 2300HKD (it was priced at 2800HKD initially).

We really benefit from EUR/USD rates these days
