Showing Scale - Yellowface Pikeblenny

  1. Some fish have no fear - and when we found this Yellowface Pikeblenny living in a small hole in the sand on the ocean floor in Cozumel, Mexico in November we were soundly threatened by this little guy.

As you can see, he is just a huge monster fish and we were appropriately scared. (F19. 1/90, ASA 100. Strobes 1/4 power, 105mm lens)

    I got a few potrait shots as well (F19. 1/90, ASA 100. Strobes 1/4 power, 105mm lens)

  2. ROFL, looks like you've been down there for a while "Mr. wrinkley."

    Cheers

  3. The 105 does a nice job. Is the second shot cropped? I am seriously considering getting one before my next trip. Does the extra working distance help out?

This second image is cropped for composition - it is actually a horizontal image orginally. This is the orginal:

The 105mm is my favourite prime lens and I would highly recommend it - my 60mm lens broke on my last trip and I haven't bothered replacing it. This means I am shooting a 12-24mm DX for wide angle and a 105mm lens for macro.

I would love to get a high quality macro zoom lens, but am still undecided whether I need one. Probably do as the 105mm is not well suited for mid-large size fish portraits.

For macro, yes the working distance of the 105mm makes a lot of difference.

P.S. That is not my finger in the first image, but yes we had been down a lot. I believe this was day 4 of the trip, dive 3 of the day for the diver in question.

  5. My 2 cents worth: The 105mm is a SUPERB macro lens, and with the cropping factor in a DSLR, it's even better. I could be very happy using nothing but the 105mm on a dive trip (and I have no choice until Cybergoldfish returns my 14mm! :P ).

    P.S.: Very nice photos, Marriard.

  6. Yep,

I agree with my 14mmless buddy - 105 is a great lensand well worth the $250.00 I paid for it!

BTW: Where do you get your nails done Paul?
