  2. I bought a Sunray mod light in April, and over the course

of a two-month trip in May and June I experienced a number

of failures with the light. It would stop working, and then start

again a week or two later for no apparent reason.

I was quite dissappointed with this $400 "flashlight."

When it was working, I had problems with the slow charge

rate, which couldn't keep up with a three dive per day schedule.

After I returned the light to Backscatter, they sent it back

to LMI, who admitted a design defect with the light, and replaced

most of the components with the latest versions. I haven't

used it much at all since I got it back from service, so I can't

give a report on the upgrades. I give credit to LMI for being

straightforward about the repairs, which essentially replaced the

entire light with a new one.

There are previous posts in this subforum which discuss this light

in more detail - try doing a search.

  3. thanks bob

good to find out how others are going with this unit.

one of my main concerns is that if it has failed twice in the last 4 months whats going to happen when warranty runs out.

i also have to give the local importer credit. the first time the unit was returned it as repaired and returned reasonably quickly.

i gues my main gripe is that when u pay nearly $1000. aust . for a light it should just work

not a lot to ask, of am i expecting to much?

  4. not a lot to ask, of am i expecting to much?

That's a very good question to ask of LMI regarding many of their products.

  5. I have a pair of them that I use for both video lighting and as a focus light for my still camera. I had one fail on its first outing. Since that one was replaced, they have been trouble free.

  6. thanks sharp

i have friends that have had trouble free use of their unit also .

a correction to my initial statement

when i first posted the light away , the whole unit was replaced not just the bulb.

  9. I own 2 and have had a variety of failures, repairs and replacements. To depend on this light, I think you really do need 2 units - both to keep a charged light and as a backup if (when) you have a failure. You should also travel with extra bulbs as they don't seem to last. When these lights work, they are the best in the industry - and to me that is worth the aggravation.

  10. thanks for the comments casey.

the price of the units in aus dollars is close to $1000 ea so its a but restrictve for me to have 2 units ,

others have said what u do in reguards to them being a good unit when they are properaly working .

  11. Craig kindly sent me some pictures which has confirmed my suspicions about this unit - Its internal dimensions are too small for the heat generated by the high power lamps...

This is why the bulbs blow frequently, the alloy alone cannot sink the heat fast enough, especially in tropical water. A suitable, calculated airgap would allow the hot spot around the bulb to dissipate adequately before getting sinked through the alloy. On top of that the lamps themselves were NOT designed for use in confined spaces.

This is called a design flaw, something L&M have become famous for, and you are well within your rights to send them back for a refund.

Sealed in batteries are another issue :(

A 20W lamp will provide enough heat make a nice cup of boiling tea in just a few minutes, a 10W just a little longer!

Personally, I cannot understand why someone would pay $400.00 for a spotting light even if it were designed correctly, in fact i almost had another cardiac event laughing

Mine cost $14.50 and has had the same lamp for 9 years, done several thousand dives and is regularly cared for by my 2 year old son.

I will however admit it may not have the same street cred., or allow me to take nice photos B)

  12. thanks for the comments cyber goldfish.

all the extra information i hear just makes me want a refund on this product more .

ill just have to cool my heals for 1 month to see what the result is .

by the way cybergoldfish the writing at the bottom of your posts in yellow is barley readable on my screen , might just be me .
