Canon G10 and set-up

  1. I might be buying a Canon G10 and u/w housing (DC-28) from someone and wanted to get a strobe to suit. I am planning to use this on my dives in Sipadan and Sodwana Bay later this year. Would I need anything specifically for these places?

The strobe I am thinking of getting is this:Intova ISS 4000. Do I need colour filters, etc?

Also any advice on what settings I should keep it on would be very useful. thanks in advance.

I wouldn't have thought you'd need filters. You shoot in RAW with the strobes providing near enough to sunlight colour temp. Then adjust the white balance later :)

Unfortunately, this is definitely a black hole hobby so I would suggest getting the best strobe you can afford now. It's not something you "try for a week and yeah, it was alright but UW photography isn't for me"

You're going to want a D3s and dual Z240s after you go to Malaysia mate :)

Have you thought about Inon S2000s?

Other stuff, you could get a 67mm adaptor from Dyron to attach WA and macro lenses to the G10 housing if you're into that. Good luck mate :)

  3. Hi,

I've been diving since 2009, and I've always brought a camera with me (I'm a photography enthusiast on land :) ). I already own a Canon G10 and use a WP DC 28 housing, and I've already decided UW photography is something I want to keep doing, but at the same time, I don't think I can "invest" more into it right now. Had I known I'd be loving it a lot, I would've gotten a better housing - haha!

That said, I'm also considering upgrading my set up to include strobes. I've received suggestions to go for 2 small strobes, and I'm interested to find out what the recommendations are. I don't think I'll be changing housings anytime soon so I'm stuck with the WP DC 28 -- are there filters available for this already?

Sharing a link to a few of my favorites... photos are edited with Lightroom but mostly just contrast, a touch of vignetting, and doing my best to get rid of the blue-green tint when shooting without filter... :)

Hi, I own a Canon G10 with Ikelite casing and Inon D2000 strobe that I have been using for a few years now, I'm not sure if you can do this here but i'm selling the whole setup on ebay where you can see some photos of what the setup looks like and some sample photos from some dives in Northern Parts of Australia http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...me=STRK:MESE:IT

Anyway to help you along, here are some settings I use.

I shoot everything in Manual even the strobe. I save the camera settings to C1 and C2. C1 = Wide Angle, C2 = Macro.

    C1 - Wide Angle

    Shutter: 1/125

    Aperature: F2.8

    AF Frame: FlexiZone

    Servo AF: On

    AF Mode: Continuous

    Spot AE Point: Center

    AF-assist Beam: Off

    IS Mode: Continuous

    Metering: Evaluative

    C2 - Macro

    Shutter: 1/80

    Aperature: F7.1

    AF Frame: FlexiZone

    Servo AF: Off

    AF Mode: Single

    Spot AE Point: Center

    AF-assist Beam: Off

    IS Mode: Continuous

    Metering: Center Weighted

    Turn Macro On

Zoom in a little when you save the settings to C2.

Shoot everything on iso 100 or 200, anything else gets grainy.

    Hope this helps

  5. I have been shooting with a G10 in a FIX housing for some time and really like it (though about to upgrade to the Nikon D7000!) I started with a single Sea & Sea YS 110a strobe and added a second one just over a year ago. I have loved the strobes, always shoot manual on the camera and strobes and usually start with the strobes at 1/2 power (less if macro). These strobes are sufficient to "graduate" to my new rig and I would recommend you buy strobes that can grow with you as well. I said I would never "invest" in a DSLR system also! I agree with the above, save your settings in the camera's custom modes C1 and C2. I use the WB set to cloudy, macro mode, ISO 200, 1/125 sec, and f/5.6 as a good starting point. I always have the camera set on macro b/c I'm either shooting macro or have the FIX fisheye lens on which makes a virtual image just in front of the lens, thus requirig macro settings for wide angle as well. Your camera manual will tell you how to save your settings that will become your starting point anytime you turn the camera on and then you can adjust settings from there to acheive your desired effect (increase shutter speed to darken the water column or freeze action; increase/decrease aperture to increase/decrease the flash exposure on your subject or change DOF, or change strobe power if you want to leave DOF alone). Good luck!
