Any thoughts on DS-161 video capability?

  1. I am thinking of buying a pair of the Ikelites DS-161s and using them as both video lights as well as strobes. Has anyone tried these strobes in video mode with D7000? I am just getting in the UW video having shot stills for a while. Appreciate any comments/thoughts.

  2. I have dual 161's on my Canon 7D housing. Not powerful enough for wide angle (Tokina 10-17mm) shots but OK for macro and closer-in video. The strobes are great for stills but if I'm going to shoot WA video I put on purpose built 50 watt HID video lights.

Not on the Nikon but on a 7D, they are fair for macro and useless for much else as video lights. Get a Sola 1200 or two and you will be lots happier.

  4. Pretty much as everyone else has said. The DS161 movie are a nice strobe but heavy for travelling especially with the restrictions in placed with baggage weights. The Ds161 500 lumen LEd's would be a nice support for a much brighter dedicated video light.

Here is a clip of a the Ds161 in action with the nikon D7000 inside a sea cave here in Australia:
