Sea and Sea YS300 optical trigger

3 posts
  1. Hi, first post on the forum.

I have just purchased a YS300 and YS30 strobe pair from an auction. I have not recieved them yet but from what I can tell the 300 has no optical trigger.

Can I get a optical sync cord for it or better yet anyone have the pin configurations for the YS300 so I can build my own?

  2. Well they arrived today and both have a front mounted optical sensor for triggering.

I also found out that if I use a Y splitting cable and plug each strobe into the 5 pin ends and nothing into the 4 pin end I can trigger either strobe optically and the other triggers via the cable which is pretty cool.

BUT I am still stuck with having to trigger the strobes via my Canon G11 flash (canon housing).

I am guessing it may end up being a little hit and miss since I will want to blank off the canon flash as much as possible to minimise back scatter.

I am unsure what the 4 pin connector on the Y splitter is meant for. Perhaps Nikon?

I wonder if I use a LDR ( light dependant resistor) across the trigger pins and mount it in front of the canon flash would it drop the resistance enough to trigger the flash or would it require more circuitry and a battery?

  3. Well I sort of feel like I am talking to myself here but will add this in case some one else needs a similar solution.R

I went down to Jaycar and brought a IR phototransistor ( looks like a 5mm LED) and put it across the 2 trigger pins on the sync cable and it fired immediately.

I then got a torch and when I slowly brought the beam across the transistor all that happened was the "ready" light on the strobe turned off.

But when I shone the torch on the transistor fast it triggered the strobe.

A quick test with my Canon G11 flash and it worked perfectly.

All that is left now is to find away to attach the photo transistor and cable to the housing. As it is the protective caps for the sync cable are clear and the diode should fit inside but I think I may be better off machining up a dedicated part that I can stick on the housing.
