Camdynamics showcased Lens & Light Optimizer 1.02, an application that creates lens profiles to correct digital camera lens imperfections. The application, designed for professional photographers, can manually produce a lens correction profile or draw from its internal database of profiles. The software corrects photos from by applying a correction filter for lens imperfections, distortion, vignetting, and lighting variations. The software is priced at $850 (€750) and is available for Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

    Pretty cool if pricey:

(So put that in your PC pipe and smoke it James! :D)

  2. Now if you could only integrate the effects of the port as well. They're probably going to add that in the PC version. :D

This works post capture so it should work on port effects as well. So no PC version needed! :D

  4. You would need to generate an underwater profile through the port though. Hopefully you could get an waterproof test chart that you could take into the pool. Laminating a test chart is not so good because it becomes shiny. May be OK if you use ambient light however.

  5. It seems to me that if you can't make use of their lens profiles, this software doesn't offer much over the much more reasonably priced panotools.

  6. Although Panotools doesn't do the light vignetting correction...

But it is free. And for $800, you can at all times buy between two and three Dell servers -- and have enough money left over for a good meal for two. :D

  7. They are proud of it and the test charts too!

Yes, panotools can do powerful lens corrections. For Nikon lens users, a reference for standard panotools correction parameters can be found here.

  8. Although Panotools doesn't do the light vignetting correction...

I had not thought about this. But it just occured to me that this should be easy to do in a photo editor, photoshop, gimp ...

    1) Take a shot of a uniformly lit white surface.

    2) Convert it to grey scale and make a negative

    3) Adjust the brightness so that the brightess part is at maxium brightness, ie 255,255,255

    4) multiply this with the photo and readjust "levels"

  9. Someone at dpreview.com had a set of actions that would correct for vignetting, and I think it was something similar to what Herb just mentioned...
