Bonaire Good Sites for Macro

  1. Hey any suggestions very much welcome. We will be there August 9 - 16. Please any one had any luck around Klein Bonaire?

  2. Gee, they are all good, but honestly, the house reef next to your lodging is the best place, in my opinion, for macro as you can dive with your buddy alone, not be hurried and not have to get back to the boat at a given time. There is an enormous amount of little critters in the sand on the way to the reef as well and on concrete blocks, etc (blenny lodges). Also don't ignore the wall near the shore or near the docks that you enter and exit from.

Nudibranchs in Bonaire are quite rare, you get a lot of lettuce leaf sea slugs but in 50 dives (looking hard for nudis) we saw maybe 4 or 5 total. On the other hand there are lots of other cool macro stuff on almost any house reef. Check out

  4. Agree with the others above. Try the house reefs later in the afternoon - the blennies really like to come out then and play. Look around in about 15-25 feet of water. You can usually sit in one spot and find sevevral blennies at once. Sailfin blennies, jawfish, other types of blennies, lettuce sea slugs, flamingo tongue, shrimp, etc. Boniare is a great place to practice your macro.

    Yeah, Bill is right.

Nudibranchs are quite hard to find around here.

I've done around 200 dives here and found maybe 2 or 3... it might be because I'm always guiding or teaching... in that case you don't have much time to look hard enough for it.

Last time I saw one it was really really tiny and it was on Invisibles sand patch... It was last week, so you can give it a shot....

If you are interested in any other nice creatures such as sea horses and frog fishes, let me know... we know the location for quite a few for now...

Enjoy your stay in our island. You'll sure have a great time! It is indeed a paradise for macro photography!

    Regards,
