Jeju island is located at the south tip of south korea , main dive sites are Mun and little Mun island, I went 2 islet shore dives and 2 boat dives , the dive shop is " big blue 33 ( http://www.bigblue33.com.kr)", owner is Mr. Ralf, a germany diver ,the unique U/W scenery were kelp + soft coral together at the same dive site, the monster-sized soft coral ( up to 150-180 cm ) have to use boat dive, located at northwest and northeast corner of Mun island.
I have never heard of soft corals and kelp together.
Two of my favorite things to photograph.
Looks like the life is similar to that of S. California with the addition of soft corals.
How cold does the water get in the winter? What are the summer water temperatures?
Hi Dave :
The kelp forest and soft coral live together only can be seen in korea jeju island in the world . The kelp will growing up to water surface in the winter season. Water temp. is warmer during July----Oct. ( 24-26 degree ) , but colder in the winter ( 19-22 degree ). no need dry suit, just 3-5 mm wetsuit + hood is OK.
very easy beach and boat dive , only 10 min boat ride from pier to the island. The " big blue 33 " is the only English-speaking dive shop in jeju island. I was shock as looking at the huge soft coral , I must return again because lots of huge soft coral I miss during this trip.
