How to configure new strobe arms?

2 posts
  1. I'm currently using a Sea&Sea Dx-1G and YS110 strobe with the Arm VII kit. However, I find it hard to get the strobe out and/or back enough to avoid backscatter. So my idea is to replace this arm-kit with something with a longer reach and more flexibility. In addition I will soon get another used YS110 that would be nice to attach to the other side.

    So, current set-up first:

This looks almost what I have today, except that my main arm i slightly shorter, but the last bit that is attached to the strobe is equal length.

I have turned the baseplate so that I have the strobe to the right of the camera. When the camera i clipped on the D-ring, I have the arm folded down and up, which positions the strobe next to the camera and the arms sticking down under the tray like a handle (you follow ;-)?) Am I misusing my strobe arms?

    New set-up

So looking forward, the new arms should have longer reach and more flexibility, maybe 2 lengths of 8" or 8+5 as suggested in the pinned WA thread. However, I'd like the kit to still be fairly compact still. So how would you suggest configuring the arms for a compact camera like this with one or two strobes?

One thing I don't quite get is how tray handles are used with the camera. The handles seem to build on the width and I don´t understand how you use two handles while operating shutter knobs and buttons. Will I want to have tray handles or should I skip them? What are the considerations?

I'm looking at the ULCS system and clones at the moment, but would be happy for any suggestions of configuration!

    Cheers

About the one or two strobe question, for WA, if you can afford a second strobe, go for it.

About the tray handles, the good thing about the handles is that you can place the strobe at the side or above the housing getting the same distance from housing to strobe in both positions.

I prefer the one arm section on each side configuration, it's simpler and compact. Others prefer a different approach.

I don't know if the housing you have could be awkward with the handles, you still can use a handle in the left side.

With the Ikelite housing I found it better with the handles than without it.
