Nikon and Canon market shares drop 35% in Japan

  1. Interesting quote from Bloomberg via Nikon rumours, regarding the impact of mirror less on the camera market in Japan.

'Bloomberg published an article on the current mirrorless camera market based on latest BCN ranking results. In 2011 mirrorless camera sales surged in Japan compared to previous years. With the lack of mirrorless solutions, Canon and Nikon’s combined share in Japan has fallen by 35%, while Sony’s share has doubled.

This is what a Tokyo-based analyst said on this topic:

“Mirrorless cameras are a threat, if the western geographies follow the same pattern as Asia, then it will be negative for Nikon and Canon.” '

Sign of things to come maybe.

  2. Funny thing about statistics and whether people know how to read them. From what I could decipher on the press release @ BCN:

Canon dropped from 31.4 to 29.1%, based on H1 2010 to 2011 for SLRs, and they were the market leader for SLR. Nikon had 34.1 in 2010, so it's sales drop had to be more drastic but I doubt they lost 35% collectively of the entire SLR market. Sony went from 7.7 to 15%.

The problem with that Bloomberg report is that they actually split the categories so that mirrorless SLR had its own category. So the numbers are a bit more fudged than presented. But as I said, with Nikon's handicap buying sensors from Sony and not having a video division, it will suffer more as mirrorless/SLT push forward.

Olympus got 38.7% of the mirrorless market and beat out everyone to be the leader.

  3. I read a book in '69 titled, 'How to Lie with Statistics". Didn't need to read the rest of the book.
