The Coral Sea off Australia

2 posts
  1. My wife and I took an anniversary trip to Australia. We based a week in Cairns and explored the rainforest. We then traveled to Port Douglas where we boarded the "Diversity" a liveaboard that traveled north to Osprey reef, then to Shark reef, then to the Ribbons on the GBR. These have been some of our best dives so far.

We left Australia after two and a half weeks and went to Hawaii for ten days. Hawaii was quite a let down, the rainforest is empty of birds, the rainforest animals are non-existant and the diving was nothing compared to the Coral Sea. Our best dive after being skunked on the Manta dive in Hawaii, was on Maui the outside of Molokini.

While diving the Coral Sea we were able to see from a distance humback whales, dove with flashlight fish, plenty of sharks and some really big groupers, soft coral. While on the GBR we snorkeled with Minke whales as well as dove the reef, tridacna clams, big blue sea stars, lots of feather stars, sharks, clown fish, clown triggers and 3 to 4 hundred pound potato cod. On a dive near Lizard Island the big cod will come right up to you.

This is my first post on this site, I use a housed film camera.

  2. I think you must have dived Hawaii during the wrong season for Pelagics, but I agree that the corals are not at their best.
