Jellyfish Lake, Palau

Read-only discussion

A visit to the Channel Mixer can help you remove some of that green. The bright area is also slightly blown out.
Otherwise, I really like the shot - good composition!
Cheers
James
Thank's James.
Actually the real color of the water there is much more gren, in that shot because of the angle of the shot they look much less green and more blue then in the others shots I have from there.
Arnon
How about something like this?
It took me about 2 seconds, and I'm sure it can be done much better with the original file with a little bit more time.
All I did is adjusting a little bit the middle "settings" in "level" in the separate color channels.
Simon
Nice work Simon, but there are 2 problems here:
1. You loosed some details from the original.
2. As I wrote to James, the colors in my frame are very close to the real colors that I remember (and can compare with others shoots I have from there). My opinion is that because we are taking picture of the nature (in our case the uw nature) I'm usually try to be as close as possible to the reality, of course now we can open a endless discussion about was is reality and so on... but I hope I made my point.
I'll upload latter another shot with the real colors that can be seen there.

No I don't want to start this disussion.
I just made the experience, that the Canon S-series cameras tend to do very greenish pictures UW, that don't look like what I saw with my Eyes.
Some Questions:
1) Did you shoot in RAW?
1.1) If yes what values did you use for WB - Correction ?
2) Is this the original or did you further color corrections? (the histogramm looks like you did)
I know I lost details in my version, but it was a 30 second quick and dirty hack on a very small picture.
Give me the original as hi-res, hi-quality JPEG, TIFF or best as RAW and 15 minutes time to play around with PS and i will give you a much better result ;-)
Simon
I didn't used RAW (not enough storage)
I done some minor color correction: reduce the amount of green a little a bit, USM and level adjustment.
Here is another shot from the Jellyfish Lake. Again, it’s the real color of the water according to what remember, its not nice deep blue but that is the reality.

Great Picture, I like this one more then the one with the diver. it is less "Cliche" ;-)
Simon
BTW try to get more storage and use RAW (especially with the PS RAW PLugin or PS CS because this is the only possibility to do Exposure correction for S Series RAWs) Microdrives are not so much expensive anymore.
Switching to RAW -- and having the possibility of good WB Correction and Exposurecorrection on RAW level -- did almost as much to my picture quality than buying a flash and the MD was much cheaper.

Arnon and Simon - those green colors are what I remember, too. My first time underwater with a camera was in Palau, in April of 2001. I was shooting with a Coolpix 990 in an Ike housing. And I took some horrible, horrible photos.
Anyway, here what I got. I have to go back, now that I've improved some. ![]()
I remember tweaking this a bit in Photoshop to get some of the greens out, but it's not too far from the original.

Eric, are you fishing for compliments? ;-)
I would say: not in you current standards but pretty pretty good for a firsttimer. I would have been happy if my first tries woud have had this quality.
heheh. I am not fishing for compliments! apologies if I seemed like it.
I did manage to get a few shots from that trip, but most of them were not so good. I was having camera/housing problems, and I really had no idea what I was doing. The SubStrobe 200 I was using was waaay too powerful, and I had to stop down all the way and shoot TTL -2.0 fEV all the time (since I wasn't shooting manual yet, at that time).
But I have wanted to go back to Palau and to Jellyfish lake with my set-up now to get some photos. It was just so much fun to be there.
I haven't actually seen any really creative, non-standard shots of jellyfish lake. anyone out there have some that they want to post?
Yes show them to us!
I really like jellyfish... and if they don't sting they are even greater.
I really have to got here 2005 or 06
Simon
Simon - Did you ever let one of those things touch your face? I found that they do actually sting slightly. You can't feel it with your hands, though.
I mean, if you touched one, which I uh... certainly... did.
oops.
They taste like crap too!
Actually I felt some tingling around my mask and some people where said that they fill something in there hands also.
